XTZ Sound Cinema Series Review
Sep 30, 2015 - 5:44 PM - by theJman
XTZ Sound Cinema Series

By Jim Wilson (theJman)

The subject of this review is a 5.1 Cinema Series system from XTZ Sound. The Cinema Series is the company's top-of-the-line home theater package targeted at the serious audiophile, the person who doesn't wish to compromise on any aspect of their HT experience. Each piece in the Cinema line was designed to integrate perfectly with the others, yet somehow XTZ still managed to differentiate them such that they retain their own unique character.

It all starts with the M6 (Main,...

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A3050 Review
Sep 28, 2015 - 5:34 PM - by Todd Anderson

Finding a great do-it-all AV receiver is a tough task that, in recent years, has been muddied and complicated by the introduction of Ultra High Definition (UHD), High Dynamic Range (HDR), HDCP 2.2 copy protection, and several new immersive audio codecs. For enthusiasts looking to deploy Dolby Atmos (now) while keeping a watchful eye on future compatibility with UHD and HDR video technologies, the last several product cycles of receivers and pre-amplifiers have been a tough buy, causing many to delay their search for another year. On the other side of the fence, manufacturers have also been feeling the heat, frustrated by a technology landscape that’s been changing faster than development and manufacturing can accommodate.

Several months ago, Yamaha released details about a stable of new receiver offerings including a new flagship model called the AVENTAGE RX-A3050. In doing so, it ended the “need to wait” buying game by becoming one of the first companies to...

Rocky Mountain Audio Fest 2015 Starts Friday
Sep 28, 2015 - 3:58 PM - by Todd Anderson
The 12th Annual Rocky Mountain Audio Fest (RMAF) is locked-and-loaded, ready to open its doors beginning this Friday, October 2nd (thru Saturday October 4th), in the Mile High City. Home Theater Shack is sending a tag team of speaker gurus, Wayne Myers and Dennis Young, to the scene to report on all of the action and news for the HTS community. Claiming to be the largest audio and home entertainment show in the United States, this Denver extravaganza is undoubtedly a big one. It will feature nearly 160 exhibit spaces packed with more than 400 companies from around the globe, neatly organized within the confines of the Denver Marriott Tech Center Hotel (4900 S Syracuse St, Denver, CO 80237).

Originally founded by the late Al Stiefel, this year’s show is destined to continue his outright passion for high quality sound. One of the more touching aspects is a donated room meant to represent Mr. Stiefel’s passion for audio. Over the last six years, innovative “new”...

Marantz's New AV7702mkII Pre-Amp Hits The Street in October
Sep 23, 2015 - 9:09 AM - by Todd Anderson
Marantz has officially announced the arrival of a new network preamp/processor. The AV7702mkII’s spec sheet is full of audiophile and enthusiast delights, which shouldn’t be too surprising for a product coming from a company that has a history of quality and performance. Today we’ll take a preview sneak peak at the new update to last year’s popular AV7702.

It wasn’t that long ago that full 7.1.4 Atmos support was hard to find amongst the AV receiver and preamp crowd. But, times have changed and Marantz’s new AV7702mkII gives buyers yet another option to consider when looking for full Atmos playback products. It supports both 7.1.4 and 9.1.2 Dolby Atmos configurations, which will require the use of at least two standalone amplifier units. It also supports the other two immersive sound codecs on the market: Auro-3D and DTS:X. Auro-3D, which is the lesser-known codec on this side of the pond, will be available to customers as a paid add-on. This should cost around...

Yamaha's New Flagship Pre-Amp: RX-A5100
Sep 18, 2015 - 6:44 PM - by Todd Anderson
Yamaha recently added a goliath to its stable of incredibly competitive – and, in some cases, class leading – AV component and receiver products with the announcement of a new flagship pre-amplifier. The CX-A5100 comes loaded with several key future-proofing features not found on its predecessor, the CX-A5000. It also offers some audiophile connectivity options omitted from the company’s current flagship AV Receiver (RX-A3050). Today we’ll preview the CX-A5100 and a few of its more enticing selling points.

The new CV-A5100 is loaded with modern features that you'd expect from a moderately priced flagship pre-amp.

The CX-A5100 is a beefy beast with dimensions that might challenge folks with smaller component spaces. Its depth pushes 19-inches, which is a lot considering a company such as Marantz has a flagship pre-amp that’s just 16-inches deep. So if the CX-A5100 ends up on your radar, make sure you get the...

Bower & Wilkins Unveils Its New 800 Series Diamond Speakers
Sep 15, 2015 - 9:39 AM - by Todd Anderson
The uniquely robust design factors carried by Bower & Wilkins (B&W) speakers are undeniable; especially those models adorned by spherical mid-range heads and Diamond tweeter toppers. If you’ve ever had a chance to see them (let alone hear them in action), then you know their physical design is even more eye catching in person. Several days ago, on the eve of celebrating its 50th anniversary of existence, Bower & Wilkins unveiled a new iteration of its highly acclaimed 800 Series Diamond loudspeakers and they aren’t being shy about boasting about improved design elements. Their new speakers “massively elevate loudspeaker performance,” claims B&W, even compared to speakers previously designed by the company, itself.

The new 800 Series Diamond is the product of nearly seven years of development, combining research, advanced engineering, and extensive listening...
