Wireless technology has been edging its way into the world of high fidelity audio more and more in recent years. Bluetooth, with its recent aptX extensions, appears destined to take its place as a truly hi-fi wireless option. And when one has tripped over and stepped on as many wires and cables as I...

Amazon's Hip New Portable Speaker, with a Tech Twist
Nov 19, 2014 - 1:58 PM - by Todd Anderson
Amazon recently popped a surprise with the announcement of a new Wi-Fi device that fills your portable audio needs while bumping Apple’s mobile assistant “Siri” out of the picture. Meet Echo, a cylindrical portable speaker smart device. While Sonos, Apple AirPlay, and other portable audio options have their place in home deployment, what they can’t do is tell you if it will rain tomorrow. Nor can they tell you if your favorite team won their big game. Apparently Echo can, along with performing multiple other daily living tasks, making it an enticing option for a portable audio solution...and a nifty holiday gift idea.

Topside view of Amazon's sleek new smart speaker, Echo.

Apple’s introduction of Siri brought the power of a personal assistant to the masses. When she works, it’s a fantastic experience and cleverly simple. But much like grabbing and clicking with a mouse, Siri still requires that a user is in contact with a smartphone...

DirectTV Strikes First; First 4K TV Service Officially Launches
Nov 14, 2014 - 7:28 AM - by Todd Anderson
DirectTV customers are waking-up to a new Hi-Definition world, as Direct TV is officially launching its new 4K TV service today. Approximately 19 titles from Paramount Pictures and Havoc will be available through the provider's Video On Demand (VOD) service, with Star Trek (2009) and Transformers: Age of Extinction headlining the offerings. DirectTV says these relatively limited initial titles will quickly be padded by more options soon.

Samsung and DirectTV are making a splash with the first-ever 4K TV service.

With every new rollout, there’s always a catch. In DirectTV’s case, users tapping into the service's new 4K universe will need specific hardware, including a supporting 2014 Samsung UHD TV (branded DirectTV 4K Ready) and DirectTV’s Genie HD DVR. Users without this equipment will be on the outside looking in.

According to ...

Budding Kickstarter that Might be Good for Your Ears
Nov 12, 2014 - 5:38 PM - by Todd Anderson
Sensitivity might be an important number on a loudspeaker’s spec sheet, but it’s also an inherent part of an audiophile’s most crucial piece of gear: the human ear. Like it or not, those two audiological sensory units on either side of your head aren’t designed to handle loud sound. Prolonged exposure to loud music can lead to permanent damage and a maddening ringing sound called tinnitus. According to the American Osteopathic Association, 1 out of every 5 teens has some form of hearing loss. This ratio is growing (about 30% larger than it was just 20 years ago), and some studies suggest that one of the biggest culprits is an increased use of headphones. With the introduction of MP3 players during that period (and, now, the widespread adoption of handheld mobile devices), logic says that these studies probably aren't too far off the mark.

The obvious preventative remedy is to turn down the sound, but most headphone users will be quick to admit that this isn’t as easy...

Samsung: No OLED Display Production in 2015
Nov 05, 2014 - 12:17 PM - by Todd Anderson
Samsung was in, then possibly in, and then it was out…and the company is beginning to indicate that “out” might just be where it remains. Last year the electronics giant wowed us all with an OLED television that promised to be the first in a long line of OLED models that enthusiasts had been *hoping* would emerge. But, in a shocking early year announcement, Samsung said it was applying the brakes on OLED large display production; manufacturing inefficiencies were proving to be too costly and Samsung was willing to let LG forge further into the OLED market alone.

Samsung's OLED S9C Series television.

Yesterday, a new report by CNET said that Samsung was not only shying away from OLED technology this year, but is officially announcing it won’t be entertaining OLED television production during 2015 either. Rather, it has elected to relegate OLED...
