AXPONA 2015 Brings A New Flavor to the Table
Apr 22, 2015 - 9:02 AM - by Todd Anderson
The Windy City has been a cold destination for the last 5 months, but things are about to heat-up. This coming Friday (April 24), Chicago is rolling-out the red carpet for audiophiles and high-end audio manufacturers for a third straight year by welcoming back Audio Expo North America (AXPONA). The event is returning to The Westin O’Hare and will run for three days.

Founded by Steve Davis in 2009, AXPONA has grown into a premier event for all that is audio. Enthusiasts will find over 125 hi-fi listening rooms at their disposal, filled with notable exhibitors such as YG Acoustics, Audio Research, Pass Labs, Focal, Legacy, Koss, Mobile Fidelity, Elusive Disc, Acoustic Sounds, Nordost, and many – many – more.

This year’s event is especially unique because the show’s production company (JD Events) has partnered with LeftField Media (co-creators of New York Comic Con) to create Audio Con. This marriage brings musical performances...

Denon and Marantz Offer HDCP 2.2 Upgrades to Flagship Models (AV8802, AVR-X7200W)
Apr 20, 2015 - 4:42 PM - by Todd Anderson
Copy Protection has existed for decades, reaching far back into the VHS era, existing as an invisible guard of licensed material. The digital media protection protocol we’ve dealt with for the last decade is called High-Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection (HDCP); Blu-ray players and HDTV set-top boxes all carry it. In the simplest of terms, it allows a source device to confirm that a display is HDCP compliant before allowing playback of content, thus making sure that you’re not outputting content to some kind of recording device.

Denon says a free HDCP 2.2 hardware upgrade will be available to AVR-7200W owners in May.

If you’ve been paying attention to recent 4K rollout news, you’ve undoubtedly seen references to HDCP 2.2, which is the newest version of HDCP and the copy protection tech that will be paired with 4K UHD in the future. Early 4K adopters (namely those that bought 4K UHD televisions during 2013 and other associated gear during...

Vizio Unveils New Reference Series Ultra-HD Televisions with Dolby Vision
Apr 16, 2015 - 11:51 AM - by Todd Anderson
This week Vizio released details about a slew of new products, headlined by the industry’s first-ever lineup of 4K Ultra HD televisions with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and support of Dolby Vision.

Big news (and good news to boot).

Vizio plans to release the first 4K Television with HDR through Dolby Vision.

Up until CES 2015, the vast majority of industry 4K marketing speak had focused purely on pixel counts and curves. Important? Yes. Game changing? Not necessarily. The enticement factor of more pixels packed into typical screen sizes that cost radically more than standard HD displays has been a tough sell. Enthusiasts are yearning for real picture enhancements, not incremental improvements over HD technologies that already perform to extraordinarily high levels. Interestingly, as we’ve waded through several years of pixel rhetoric, two new tantalizing technologies have surfaced: HDR and Wide Color Gamut.

DTS Reveals Further Details About Its Immersive Audio Codec, DTS:X
Apr 15, 2015 - 9:26 PM - by Todd Anderson
The long awaited DTS:X information reveal has arrived. Yes, DTS missed the codec’s projected March reveal date by a handful of days, but the company has more than compensated by supplying quite a few interesting details. Without wasting further time, let’s dive in and take a look at what DTS has been cooking.

A look at DTS's demo room from its official rollout of DTS:X.

Immersive Sound Refresher
DTS has officially joined Dolby as one of two “object-based audio” solutions. The third immersive sound competitor, Auro-3D, relies on more traditional channel based audio. The benefit of object-based audio is that sounds are not tied to specific speakers, but linked to specified locations within a listening space. This strips away the necessity of set speaker configurations and specific numbers of speakers by allowing the system to “scale” a soundtrack’s presentation to fit varying playback set-ups while staying true to a...

Introduction

SVS is a name many of us are familiar with, a name that is destined to become more familiar, even with the big box store crowd. Synonymous with subwoofers, and recently with speakers, SVS has been slowly but surely expanding their loudspeaker moxie. The Prime Series is the next step in that evolution.

Prime is an entirely new line for SVS, slotted under the vaunted Ultra line, using filter down technology to bring exceptional value to us, the consumer.

Description

The SVS Satellite Prime is a rear ported two-way dome and cone monitor, with the 1" aluminum dome crossing over...

Rumor Mill: Samsung Ready to Re-Enter OLED TV Market
Apr 02, 2015 - 1:09 PM - by Todd Anderson
As we’ve learned over the past several years, definitive R&D commitments from OLED television manufacturers have been sketchy at best. It’s a wishy-washy bunch. Sony and Panasonic enjoyed a brief 18-month OLED TV venture before calling it quits in December 2013 (they re-joined in 2014 to explore OLED displays for smaller devices). Samsung has also been on and off with the technology, announcing (last year) that it was shelving its OLED interests for all of 2015. Then there’s LG, which is the only manufacturer holding-down the fort. The company is chips-all-in and is actually running primetime OLED advertising to back its currently available models.

Is Samsung putting their iron back in the OLED flame?

There has been speculation – for nearly a year – that OLED’s once rosy prospects are destined to crash in a ball of flames. The mere thought of this potential collapse has sent videophiles to their knees. How can this be, they...
