Pioneer Elite SC-89 9.2-Channel AV Receiver Review
Jul 28, 2015 - 6:23 PM - by Peter Loeser

As friends and colleagues learn of my exceptional level of expertise when it comes to electronics [warning: exaggeration] many of them will inevitably ask for my advice or opinion regarding the purchase and setup of home theater gear, computers, etc. I've been fortunate to have tried a fairly wide variety of components in my own home, and I like to think I've become pretty good at matching a person's needs to an appropriate receiver. One thing I have noticed is that I usually find myself recommending Pioneer Elite for people who need a single unit that does pretty much everything. The Elite AVRs, in my experience, are great performers and have tons of features to offer. I do believe they are slightly underrated in general. Before I start to sound biased (too late?) I will say that I began the review of a $3000 AVR with pretty high expectations, so the SC-89 had its work cut out for it.

The Elite SC-89 is certainly...

Klipsch Releases Three New Speaker Models (RP-280FA, RP-140SA, REP-450CA)
Jul 27, 2015 - 9:22 PM - by Todd Anderson
A new day, more Atmos. This time we’re turning our attention to a wildly popular speaker company known for its efficient horn-loaded loudspeakers: Klipsch. Recently, the company officially debuted three new speaker models with immersive audio in mind.

Klipsch has released an all-in-one Atmos speaker solution, the RP-280FA.

Headlining the debut is a floorstander and Atmos all-in-one model. Since the announcement of Atmos, we’ve seen quite a few Atmos module speakers hit the market. These modules are designed to be placed on top of existing speakers in order to bounce sound off a ceiling to create a sense of height. As we reported last week, this isn't the best option for immersive sound primarily because lower frequency sounds are more diffuse and much harder to aim via sound reflection. However,...

Denon Releases Two New Competitively Priced AVRs (AVR-X4200, AVR-X3200)
Jul 26, 2015 - 8:05 PM - by Todd Anderson
Denon Electronics has made an aggressive move within the ranks of home theater AVRs offerings. Last week, the company officially announced the release of two new Atmos enabled receivers that are loaded with future friendly technologies, including support of High Dynamic Range (HDR) video.

Demon’s new AVENTAGE AVR-X4200W ships next month.

The 7.2-channel AVR-X4200W is the most enticing of the company’s newly announced receivers, hitting the street with an MSRP of $1,499. If immersive audio is in your future, the X4200W should be on your radar. It can run Dolby Atmos in 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 configurations out of the box (both of which require an external two-channel amp), and offers DTS:X compatibility with a free firmware update due later this year. Despite requiring a slightly different speaker array, the X4200W can also run Auro-3D in a 9.1 configuration for an additional cost (price to be determined).

On the video side of...

A Dolby Atmos Update with Impressions from THX
Jul 21, 2015 - 5:43 PM - by Todd Anderson
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X have been simmering in the back of our minds for quite some time. In fact, it’s easy to call Immersive Sound both ‘old news’ and ‘the hottest topic’ in the home theater world. While it has infiltrated some homes, many enthusiasts have delayed buying an Atmos enabled AVR simply because most new AVRs released during the last several product cycles are missing crucial pieces of future tech – think along the lines of HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0a, and DTS:X – many of which can’t be added with a simple firmware upgrade. That is changing, however, as companies (such as Onkyo and Yamaha) have recently announced AVR models that are fairly future proof. In fact, Yamaha’s soon-to-be-released AVENTAGE RX-A3050 appears to cover every base possible (including offering a 7.1.4 speaker configuration with the use of an external amplifier). This, of course, is good news and means that more enthusiasts will be upgrading in the coming months.

Rythmik F8 Review
Jul 18, 2015 - 8:51 PM - by theJman
Rythmik Audio F8

By Jim Wilson (theJman)

The subject of this review is the Rythmik Audio F8 subwoofer. The F8 is an acoustic suspension design utilizing dual 8" drivers in a front-firing configuration. Each driver is coupled to its own 300 watt RMS class D Hypex Ucd amplifier featuring Rythmik's patented servo control mechanism. Quoted frequency response is 18Hz-250Hz, with the -3dB point @ 20Hz.

Everything is contained in a rather tidy cabinet measuring just 20"x11.25"x14" (HWD in the vertical position, including grill). Due to the slender profile the F8 actually looks smaller than those dimensions imply when seen in person. ...

Bower & Wilikins Introduces Three New Custom-Installation Speakers (CCM Cinema 7, CMW Cinema 7, and CCM632)
Jul 16, 2015 - 4:37 PM - by Todd Anderson
Bower & Wilkins is welcoming three new models to its growing stable of custom installation speakers. Dubbed the CCM Cinema 7 (in-ceiling), CMW Cinema 7 (in-wall) and CCM632 (in-ceiling), these new speakers are designed for discreteness and ease of installation.

There’s little doubt that enthusiasts prefer floor standing and bookshelf speakers strictly because of sound quality. But, you can never have enough options when it comes to discrete in-wall and on-ceiling needs for small spaces and multi-purpose rooms, or quite simply to maximize acceptance by a spouse's eyes. When it comes to a company with pedigree, such as Bower & Wilkins, it’s easy to assume any offering (floor standing or wall cavity bound) is going to meet a certain level of audio quality. The company says their new speakers offer “very high performance thanks to the application of [company] core acoustic technologies.” As of press, the speakers’ specifications haven’t been released, but rest...
