OPPO is the company that makes the Blu ray players that will play anything, right? Well, they are branching out. They have recently introduced products that take them in one new direction that is not surprising at all and in another new direction that you might not have expected.

LG Raises the Bar With Its Own 105-inch Monster; This One is 5K
Jul 30, 2014 - 11:51 AM - by Todd Anderson
If it were possible for words to convey the party stopping sound of a needle scratching across vinyl, it might read something like this:

Did you hear a screeeeeeech rip through your head? We most certainly did. Having spent the better part of a year trying to make sense of 4K and its related technologies (not to mention digesting new products, such as Samsung’s $120,000 special order 105-inch 4K TV), LG Electronics has decided to make a headline-grabbing splash.

LG’s beautiful 105-inch 5K resolution 105UC9 television.

Yesterday, the consumer electronics giant announced the availability of its own curved 105-inch Ultra High-Definition television (model 105UC9) in South Korea. Sporting a gorgeous 21:9 aspect ratio, LG says that it took advantage of the expanded screen real estate by cramming it with 11 million pixels. For those of you keeping score, that means the 105UC9 has a jaw dropping resolution...

BIC Acoustech H-100II Subwoofer Review

BIC Acoustech H-100II

By Jim Wilson (theJman)

The subject of this review is the BIC Acoustech Cinema Series H-100II, a 12" bass reflex subwoofer. The H-100II is relatively small for a ported sub, measuring just 17.25"x14.75"x17.75" (HWD). It's not terribly heavy either, weighing a mere 33 lbs. The BASH amp is rated at 150 watts RMS, 500 watts peak. Stated frequency response is 24Hz-200Hz +/-3dB. BIC, an abbreviation for British Industry Corporation, was conceived as an American firm specializing in British products. They're a well established company that has been making speakers since 1973.

Ultra High-Definition is Better Defined for Consumers and Retaliers
Jul 27, 2014 - 9:22 AM - by Todd Anderson
At some point in the last year we described Ultra High-Definition as an unavoidable wave; doubters expressed hesitation about its benefits and scoffed at the idea of spending thousands of dollars to replace their minty HD displays (and rightly so...). In hindsight, the use of the word “wave” may have been an understatement. If you’re still in the “resist until the bitter end” camp, you’d better gather your valuables and seek higher ground...riding on the back of manufacturers seeking access to consumer wallets, UHD is quickly becoming a magnitude four tsunami destined to forever alter the Hi-Def landscape. It's a landscape that is changing fast and if you think you might enter the new 4K waters, it's a good idea to be fully informed before you swipe the credit card.

Nearly two years ago, the Consumer Electronics Association established “first generation UHD characteristics.” At that time, the organization’s Board of Industry Leaders...

Samsung Sets Limited Market for its 105-inch Flagship Display
Jul 23, 2014 - 1:54 PM - by Todd Anderson
Time for some fun fluff.

Just over a year ago Samsung smacked the Ultra HD television market with a bombshell price announcement. The $40,000 85-inch S9 Ultra HD television was a shocker and became the anchor for endless comparisons of what you could buy instead, including sporty cars and boats. After all, mentioning $40,000 and the word "television" in the same sentence does translate to obscene amounts of absurdity for 99.99-percent of electronics consumers, especially considering the vast amount of modestly priced big screen options available in the market (not ignoring projector/screen combinations).

The 105-inch UN105S9W, ready for your ordering pleasure

So, would you believe that Samsung recently revealed a price for its new UHD flagship model that makes $40,000 sound like a bargain? We're talking a number that is three-times larger. Yes folks, the new 105-inch curved wall-mountable UHD television (Model: UN105S9W)...

In general, we have come to expect the soundbar to be an all-in-one solution with a focus on convenience and simplicity but with compromises in performance. It is a perfect solution for those who do not have the space, time, or budget to set up a full surround sound system. For others, it gets louder than their TV speakers, and that is good enough. So what about the HT enthusiasts that have the budget and desire for good performance, but face structural or aesthetic obstacles? A compact speaker bar with discrete left, center, and right channels built with high quality passive speaker components may be the right solution. While powered soundbars range from terrible to surprisingly good, a passive soundbar paired with good amplification has the potential to bring the home theater experience to the next level. Phase Technology's Teatro TSB3.0 is positioned to satisfy those who need the best sound in a challenging space.

Value Electronics' 10th Annual TV Shootout is Set to Crown the "King of HD/UHD TV"
Jul 19, 2014 - 5:47 AM - by Todd Anderson
It’s hard to put a price on ratings information and expert evaluations, especially when it comes to big-ticket items like flat panel displays. Enthusiasts shopping for new displays can spend days – even weeks – reading reviews, combing through threads on A/V forums, and visiting store showrooms…but rarely do they have an opportunity to test, evaluate, and compare flagship models side-by-side (let alone through the eyes of experts). For the past nine years, Home Theater Shack sponsor and independent audio and video retailer Value Electronics (ValueElectronics.com) has been hosting an incredible Television Shootout evaluation event pitting the latest TVs from top manufacturers against one another. This year, they’re hosting it again, making this the 10th annual event to crown “King of HD/UHD TV.” The event is being held in Value Electronics’ Scarsdale, NY location on Saturday August 16 and Sunday August 17, 2014.
