Apr 11, 2014 - 6:54 AM - by Todd Anderson
Room Correction solutions are vitally important to the vast majority of enthusiasts, especially for those of us that want to enjoy great sounding music in less than ideal acoustic environments. MiniDSP recently announced the release of two new stereo room correction product packages that are sure to turn heads and attract quite a bit of attention. The DDRC-22A (analog) and DDRC-22D (digital) audio processors are the first installments into the Dirac Series of high resolution units (24-bit 96kHz), resulting from a collaboration between miniDSP and Dirac Research (a premier player in high-performance digital sound optimization, room correction, and sound field synthesis).

"Dirac is well known for the premium audio quality and sound accuracy they have brought to luxury cars and professional cinema theaters around the world. We’re excited to embed Dirac Live technology into our line of room correction audio...

Yamaha Introduces Four New A/V Receivers (RX-V777BT, RX-V677, RX-V577, and RX-477)
Apr 08, 2014 - 4:41 AM - by Todd Anderson
The early year model rollout period is always fun, especially for those of us that love new gear. This time it’s Yamaha’s turn with its recent introduction of three new 7.2 channel receivers, the RX-V577, the RX-V677, and the RX-V777BT, along with a wallet friendly 5.1 channel model (the RX-477). This quad series of AV receivers brings quite a few new features to the table (yes, HDMI 2.0), including Yamaha’s first attempt at offering built-in Wi-Fi on an A/V receiver. Let’s take a quick look at a few key highlights with a preview of Yamaha’s new audio darlings.

The flagship model of the RX series is the robust RX-V777BT. This 110 W per channel (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9% THD, 2-ch driven) is the only model of the group to offer Bluetooth compatibility for wireless streaming from various smart device sources. It also features HDMI Zone B for supplying video and audio to another room and Yamaha’s topflight proprietary YAPO R.S.C. with multipoint measurement for...

Oppo Releases New Planar Magnetic Headphones (PM-1, PM-2)
Apr 04, 2014 - 3:23 PM - by Todd Anderson
The name Oppo is synonymous with quality and extraordinary customer service, built on the success of multiple iterations of high-end DVD and Blu-ray disc players. Those of you familiar with the company are likely aware of Oppo’s cell phone line, which marked the company’s first venture outside of the disc playing world. Yesterday, Oppo branched out in yet another direction with the introduction of a new line of planar magnetic headphones.

Simply explained, planar technology uses a flat, two dimensional, rectangular diaphragm that radiates forward and back to produce a wide range of frequencies. The entire surface of Oppo’s diaphragm is driven evenly via a symmetrical push/pull system using a spiraling pattern of flat aluminum conductors placed on both sides of the diaphragm. Oppo says the resulting sound is linear, stable, phase coherent, and minimally distorted. In other words: good.

The top model in Oppo’s new headphone family is the PM-1, a comfortable,...

Samsung Releases 2014 Product Information, Part 2
Apr 01, 2014 - 1:06 PM - by Todd Anderson
Last week we previewed Samsung’s 2014 Television offerings, featuring their newly designed Ultra High-Definition (UHD) Curved displays. This week, in Part Two of our Samsung series, we’ll highlight other Samsung home theater and audio products new to this year. One of the company’s big pushes during 2013 involved the launch of their SHAPE Wireless Audio-Multiroom System, offering a hub-based multi speaker system that can play music through wireless speakers placed throughout a home. Samsung says wireless connectivity and convenience is a continued focus for 2014.

This leads us to the release of the SHAPE M5 wireless speaker. Triangular in design (allowing for a flush fit in a corner), the M5 is the younger brother of the larger M7, measuring 13.5-inches Wide X 6.6 Deep X 4.4 High (5 lbs). The unit can be placed vertically on a flat surface or horizontally on its side with kickstand support. Samsung is tightlipped concerning this 15 Watt two-channel speaker’s specifications. Its...

Onkyo Announces Two New AVRs (TX-NR535 and TX-NR636), Featuring Proprietary Room Correction Software and HDMI 2.0
Mar 25, 2014 - 11:56 AM - by Todd Anderson
Onkyo A/V Receivers are wildly popular within enthusiast circles and frequently find themselves on recommended buy lists due to their exceptional build quality, near-spec bench test results, and tech inclusions. It’s hard to find an owner that isn’t willing to boast about the brand and glowingly gush about a positive ownership experience. Today we’ll preview two new Onkyo AVRs, the 5.2-channel TX-NR535 and 7.2-channel TX-NR636, both of which feature HDMI 2.0 connectivity and a new proprietary room correction suite.

Recently, we previewed several Pioneer/Elite receivers featuring the industry’s first proclaimed HDMI 2.0 connections. With the 4K rush in full swing, consumers should expect most manufacturers to shift their attention to HDMI 2.0, especially because of HDMI 1.4’s incompatibility with future UHD technology. Though Onkyo’s marketing material falls short of screaming “HDMI 2.0” due to complicated marketing restrictions associated with HDMI number specifications, the...

Samsung Releases 2014 Product Information, Part 1
Mar 24, 2014 - 10:37 AM - by Todd Anderson
Late last week Samsung Electronics released key pricing and availability information for its 2014 home entertainment lineup. Today, we’ll feature details about the company’s television offerings in the first of a two part product preview series. Its no secret that the Ultra High-Definition (UHD) display arena is shaping up to be a high-stakes cage match pitting major manufacturers against one another, each one aligning their resources and focusing their energies on specific technologies and design characteristics. One of Samsung’s chosen weapons is a radical physical feature that has raised eyebrows (and curiosity) among enthusiasts: curved displays.

In the words of Samsung’s media relations department, their curved display design is meant to “deliver a bold theatrical experience and fundamentally change the way the world views TVs.” They claim the screen curvature creates a panoramic effect that makes images appear bigger and more...

Better late than never, here's a quick look at electronics and entertainment industry news that you may have missed in the month of February:

Netflix headlined February’s news craze by agreeing to pay Comcast an undisclosed fee to keep the internet provider’s pipelines open to speedy Netflix delivery. Not soon after, Verizon and AT&T reps announced they are negotiating with Netflix as well.

Texas Instruments announced its smallest micro-mirror array ever, which can be used in wearable and augmented reality displays. The tech is based on DLP Cinema technology and is capable of producing HD quality images. The chipset is being used in Avegant’s Glyph visor, ...
