Bass From Above: Beale Street Audioís New In-Ceiling Subwoofers (ICS6, ICS8)
Mar 27, 2015 - 4:48 PM - by Todd Anderson
In-wall speakers are one way to create a clean looking media space, but in-wall and on-wall subwoofers arenít exactly commonplace. Speakers placed in walls are less likely to rattle and create annoying vibrations simply because they are riding less meddlesome frequencies. But deep bass? Well, deep bass can cause buzzes and rattles when located in a dedicated cabinet, let alone when married to the cavity of a wall.

Beale Street Audio's new ICS6-MB in-ceiling subwoofer.

Enter Beale Street Audio, a new upstart company based in the heart of Memphis, Tennessee. Their first products were a range of 4, 6.5 and 8.5-inch wall/ceiling speaker models, in addition to an integrated 2-channel amplifier. Recently, they announced two new products: In-ceiling subwoofers.

Yes, weíre talking bass from above, generated from two different models of passive subwoofers. Because low frequencies (<80 Hz) are omni-directional, subwoofers can be...

Ten New Turntables Revealed in 2015
Mar 20, 2015 - 12:10 PM - by Todd Anderson
If the recent vinyl revolution has caught you by surprise, then you’re probably unaware that dozens of companies currently manufacture turntables. Today, we'll spotlight ten new turntables that were showcased at CES 2015 or have been officially launched this year. Some are pure budget-crushers while others carry familiar brand badges. What’s striking is the omission of one incredibly familiar name: Technics. The high-end Panasonic brand, and maker of the ever-popular SL-1200 player, had its analog turntable division shuttered in late 2010. Despite recently injecting life into the brand, Panasonic’s rollout of new Technics products has not included any turntable gear.

So, without further delay, here's ten new turntables (in order of expense) that can breathe new life into your vinyl collection.

10. TechDAS Air Force 2 (MSRP $50,000)

Vinyl: Don't Call It a Fluke, It's a Comeback
Mar 17, 2015 - 1:07 PM - by Todd Anderson
A recent thread on Home Theater Shack caught my eye and sent my mind shuffling through years of memories associated with collecting records. The original post asked a very simple question: should the OP revisit buying vinyl? Of course this question can be answered from any number of angles (the collecting perspective, availability, sound quality benefits or lack there of, and ease of use/maintenance), and Shack members have offered quite a bit of advice. Nearly paralleling the post-date of this thread, I spent an evening-out in the lower Adams Morgan area of Washington, D.C. Much to my surprise, I walked past not one…not two…but three independent record stores within a small block radius. These stores were thriving with customers busily flipping through bins chock-full of records. Match this discovery with the OP’s vinyl thread and a recent finding pasted on Onkyo’s website, and curiosity has killed this cat. Is vinyl really back?

XTZ Sound Tackles Immersive Sound With Its New Cinema Series S2 Atmosphere Speaker
Mar 12, 2015 - 8:08 AM - by Todd Anderson
XTZ Sound recently announced a new addition to their Cinema Series of loudspeakers and subwoofers: the Atmosphere S2. In August of last year we previewed XTZ’s Cinema Series, revealing a drop-dead gorgeous collection of gear composed of the M6 bookshelf, S5 surround, and the 1X12 and 3X12 subwoofers. Today, we’re previewing the S2, a unique height channel that rounds-out XTZ’s Cinema Series lineup.

The primary function of the Atmosphere S2 is to handle height-channel audio found in Immersive Sound. Dolby Atmos (along with DTS-X and Auro 3D) has captured the attention of enthusiasts, and speaker manufacturers are quickly responding with specialized product solutions in the form of...

Denon AVR-X4100W 7.2-Ch Network Receiver Review
Mar 10, 2015 - 10:43 AM - by Peter Loeser

Denon receivers have maintained a respectable level of popularity among home theater enthusiasts with a reputation for good performance and up-to-date technology. The brand's updated lineup for 2014 aims to maintain reputation with an impressive collection of features to compliment their proven design. Two of the major talking points of late 2014 and early 2015 have been 3D/Immersive audio formats and automated room correction. The processing power required for both features pushes the limits of typical AV receivers up to this point. Rather than compromise, Denon is one of the few that has chosen to bump their hardware specs in order to support Dolby Atmos as well as one of the most in-depth room correction and EQ packages available for home theater. Although there's certainly more to good performance than a nice spec sheet, the AVR-X4100W appears at first glance to be a serious contender.

The AVR-X4100W is a...
