Good monitor for the price December 28, 2007 Bron (Richmond, VA USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I found this monitor on sale for $200. Even at $260-300 it would be a good deal. You will not find many monitors in this price range of this size and with an HDMI port. I bought it primarily for use viewing DVDs and videos. It is designed to be used primarily as a computer monitor, but I figured it could also be used as a cheap LCD HDTV monitor. Although I haven't tried it yet, based on my experience so far, I expect it will make a great gaming monitor. I also plan to use it with an HD-DVD player in the future as well. br / br /For viewing videos, I tested this monitor by hooking up a DVD player with HDMI up-scaling via the HDMI port. Note that this monitor does not support audio via the HDMI cable, only via its "PC-like" audio cable. I used an adapter I had handy and hooked up the RCA-audio (Red/White) from the DVD player to the audio cable supplied (mini-jack type). This worked fine. For normal use in my situation, audio will go to a surround sound amp and speakers. For casual PC/TV/video the built in speakers are adequate (only 1 watt rms) but barely so. Still for this price having speakers at all is a bonus. br / br /Once hooked up, I played some commercial standard def DVD's, some DivX videos, and some ReplayTV videos I had recorded to DVD. The commercial DVD (Babylon 5: The Lost Tales) looked great. (This is not a videophile DVD, just your average fare.) Of course, I had to adjust the monitor's settings. I found the 9300K color setting the best (the "user" color mode set to 50-50-50 (RGB) would also probably be fine - don't leave this at the factory default of 100-100-100!). Brightness is very good, I actually turned it down to about 33 (contrast needs to be turned down also). br / br /There was a very noticeable improvement in image detail going from 480p to 720p. 1080i also looked good, but I found it hard to pick the best between 720p and 1080i, little difference that I could see in this short test. At both 720p and 1080i the image looked as good as that of most LCD-type HDTV units I've seen. LCD's cannot compete with Plasma and CRT in terms of deep, rich blacks and smooth color, but I found this monitor very pleasant and better than many. The image was nicely detailed, with no noticeable motion artifacts or other defects. I set the sharpness at 4 (one higher than the default 3 (1-6 range). I find all LCD's look a little "soft" (mostly due to the greater contrast range of the CRT) compared to my CRT-based HDTV. Still, the image looked very good, with excellent detail and sharpness to my eyes. Color was good as well, not quite as rich as my CRT-based HDTV, again, but very pleasant and realistic. Even at a very close viewing distance (about 2 feet) the image was pleasing. (I noticed no stuck pixels on this unit and little or no "bleeding" of the backlight, by the way.) The Divx videos looked very good. The RTV video, which is lower res and already has some compression artifacts, looked about as expected. The flaws were all nice and clear. ;) br / br /All in all I am extremely pleased. I don't think you could touch this baby without spending a great deal more. 22 inch LCD TV's are selling for around $450-650, and other 22 inch computer monitors cost significantly more than this one (and no HDMI on most). This unit is a bit of a quirk, in my opinion, in that it's an unusual find (the HDMI port), cheap, but appears to be good quality and has an above average 3-year warranty to boot! Bargain hunters should love it. br / br /The monitor stand is just adequate. You can vary the viewing angle slightly, but not the height. But it's fine, about the same as most. No HDMI cable is included, but you can get them for $10 here at Amazon and elsewhere. (Don't waste your money on expensive "gold" HDMI cables!) br / br /The blue logo light is a bit bright, but I can live with it. The monitor also goes into a power saving mode after a few seconds with no signal which is nice. Then the logo changes to a softer orange glow. br / br /The OSD (on-screen display menu) is fairly typical with all the basic adjustments needed. The manual comes on a CD, not printed and is pretty terse. Little discussion other than basic hookup. Still, that's fairly typical as well. A VGA/D-sub cable is supplied. I have not tested it yet with my PC or laptop, but it should work fine. I'll try to come back and post the results later on these other uses. br / br /Bottom line, this is an excellent buy at these prices and the 3-year warranty is a big plus. The quality seems to be excellent. If you're looking for a good wide-screen PC monitor or a cheap LCD HDTV monitor for the bedroom or office, this baby will do the trick! br / br /I would give it a 5 star rating if it came with a printed manual and HDMI cable and had better speakers, but it's a close call. I gave it 4 stars to indicate there is some room for improvement, but if your expectations are realistic, I think you will be very pleased with this unit. (As a PC-monitor only, I might give it 5 stars based on the price, warranty and over-all quality.) br / br /1-1-08 Follow up: For movie DVD's I've found the warmer color temp setting of 6500K looks good. Also, I boosted the brightness and contrast up a bit more now for darker movies and TV shows (40 B, 36 C). Will take somne trial and error to find best compromise. Ambient room light makes a difference. Also, hooked up to my laptop and it worked fine. br /
Great monitor, especially for the price!!! December 2, 2007 kjsieps (NW Louisiana) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great monitor with a crisp, clear picture and I had no dead pixels! It was very simple to set up--plug and go. The speakers aren't great, but at least they have some. I like the fact that it has HDMI and not just DVI. I've had this monitor for over a month and I couldn't be happier. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a cheap, but good widescreen monitor!
good deal on large screen November 7, 2007 R. Bell (Fort Collins, CO United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Nice 22 inchd monitor, no bad pixels. Supports a lot of screen formats. I had to adjust the brightness up to 95% as it was a bit on the dim side. No complaints. I like the fact that the adjustments are on the bottom edge, so when adjusting the tilt you don't hit them or the power by accident. There is only about 1 inch border around the screen itself and it appears less than that because of dual color, so has a nice appearance. Like the 3-year warranty you won't find on other brands. No buzz or hum.
Very good picture but forget about the internal speakers! October 24, 2007 B. HILL (Indiana) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Using this with my pc (hdmi) and my Xbox 360(vga) and it looks great. Very good picture and the monitor is huge. I upgraded from a 19 WS. The speakers are just worthless though so don't count on them. The are as loud as a wisper but for the price I would buy again.
