5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Needed   March 4, 2008

Short of having a person on-call to actually scan the lines of text in for me, the C-Pen 20 does the rest! I was worried that I'd be disappointed or it would be a steep learning curve, but the C-Pen is great, and once I got over my nervousness and just tried it out, it was very easy to use.

Once you load the software, plug in the USB cord that links the pen itself, all you have to do is open the program you want to load the text into (such as, Word), then begin scanning the lines you want. A little practice to get used to scanning each individual line -- at an even speed -- and you're on your way. Sometimes you have to fix a word or line, but all in all, it's a boon to anyone who has to excerpt text.

As a tip, don't be confused by the button on the pen, you can assign a task, such as "Enter" so you can insert spaces between paragraphs. Anyway, just try it, and it'll be self-evident. The only thing that could be improved is a short video with the software to demonstrate how easy it is to use, and more detailed written instructions.

I recommend it without reservation! If I could, I'd give one to everyone I know who might use it.

I do a lot of scanning with my flatbed using ABBYY FineReader OCR software and really appreciate the quality of the scan. One of the challenges with using a flatbed is in maintaining a semblance of the original format. Usually I end up spending extra time just reformatting the whole document.

Been using OCR's since the early 80's when my first unit was a Burroughs OCR that cost around $20,000 if I remember right. Back then I owned a word processing center and we used this machine for all sorts of jobs.

I'm telling you this ABBYY is quite the package. The accuracy is beholding especially considering all the variables it needs to take into account while scanning. Hand scanning is not a precise process. The line is not perfect; the speed is not constant etc.

Got to admit I was a bit hesitant to order this C-Pen, but did. The install wasn't as smooth as I'd hoped for. After installing, then re-installing - then doing that for a third time --- of course following the instructions which are quite simple, I finally got it.

I'm a software trainer and have installed hundreds of programs. Yet, I was a bit perplexed at this one. Anyways, once installed it worked flawlessly.

Whenever I have any install challenge I'm figuring it's possibly partially my fault. Since I had left some programs open ---- that's probably it.

Now I'm Totally Impressed with the Excellent Results. What a great tool.

Not only is it accurate --- it scans very fast --- as fast as I can read. The only challenge is scanning information from a book with hills near the spine, I can hand scan almost as fast as I want making sure my line is straight.

Every once in awhile I'll notice a line with mixed results --- due to an uneven surface or the pen angle.

The flatbed is easier to scan as I don't need to focus on the lines of text, but more work is needed in formatting. This pen takes some focus but the end result needs less formatting.

Imagine the beast this would be if it could scan two or even three lines at a time.

As it is --- I'm more than satisfied and thrilled to have this great tool.

I always relate to the reviews, and understand there is not such thing as perfect. This is as close as I need to being perfect for this type of product. Excellent job C-Pen and ABBYY!

5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect   February 28, 2008

I was unable to find a C-Pen 20 on Amazon without a translation pack, which I didn't need, so I bought directly from C-Pen. [Amazon, take note...] Nonetheless, I have been buying from Amazon since it was just a bookstore, am a loyal customer (better service than even high-end brick and mortar stores), and think Amazon's reviews are a premier source for informing others, so thought I would post the review here.

I had tried an earlier C-Pen and was disappointed. The LCD was hard to read, it was hard to figure out the software, and transferring text was a pain.

However, the C-Pen 20 seems perfect; the only reason I say "almost" is because there is always room for improvement, right?

I just wanted something to scan text from books into my research notes in EndNote.

You install software from the CD; basically insert CD and follow instructions. The "fast start" instructions basically tell you to do this before attaching the C-Pen to your USB port. OK.

Then attach the C-Pen and follow instructions. (Note: if you had installed a previous C-Pen, make sure that when you are offered a choice of drivers, pick the one that appears both on your hard drive AND on the installation CD, which you should still have in your CD drive. Otherwise, you'll have to do as I did, and deinstall both C-Pen software programs using Windows XP's Control Panel, use Device Manager to deinstall the C=Pen itself, and reboot, and then reinstall.)

The C-Pen 20 has one pushbutton, which is preprogrammed to do "Enter" for a new line, which I found to be right for me.

There is a little button on the bottom which turns the C-Pen on when you press it down on the page. Much better than having to press a button to activate it. Good job, C-pen!

The user manual/helpfile is accessed through a Task Bar System Tray icon right-click. It is a single HTML page. The great thing is that this device needs no more manual than that.

The recognition is quite good, comparable to the best provided by OmniPage (which I also use). But it's much, much more convenient. You just place your cursor in your application (for me, EndNote) and then run the C-Pen across the text you want to recognize. And the text appears. And if you want to insert a couple of carriage returns, then just press the button on the pen a couple of times.

Fast setup. Easy to use. Elegant design without lots of extraneous features. Does its job quietly, effectively and without any fuss. A joy to use.

Love it.

Can't comment on the translation functions as I didn't purchase that option.
