5 out of 5 stars Kindle - the future is here for eBooks   July 20, 2008

Since I bought my Kindle, I find it hard to force myself to read my stack of ten unread regular books (I am trying to alternate between regular and eBooks). The ebook format is so much easier to read that I find myself reading faster and for longer periods. It also works well with a booklight (better than with a regular book), so I can read in bed without disturbing my wife. Battery life is very good as long as I don't have the wireless Whispernet on. I also conserve battery power by turning the Kindle off when I am not reading (instead of letting it go to standby). The Kindle bookstore is easy to use, but I find browsing the Kindle store via a PC to be less time consuming and it seems to find more books in my PC searches. The onboard dictionary and Wikipedia access are handy features. I don't think I would subscribe to a Kindle version of a magazine or newspaper or any blogs, since I would have to leave the Whispernet on all the time (decreasing battery life). It is also great to have an unlimited supply of reading material handy, so I can switch between books whenever the mood strikes.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent readability, very convenient, some glitches.   July 20, 2008

My experience with the Kindle in the first 3 months has primarily been with magazines and 3 different books. 2 of those books seemed to be rendered digitally, and the third seemed to be scanned images or something like that, because the font was somewhat difficult to read, and not all of the characters were even complete. There are still quite a few "older" books that aren't available yet, so don't expect to find everything that you're looking for. As far as the device, the battery life has been great, the screen, when the font is good is very readable.

The only downside with the device currently is that the buttons are potentially too easy to push, they fill almost the entire side of both the left and right sides of the Kindle and are very easy to bump on accident when you are holding the device with one hand. Also, the back cover slides off too easily when you are using the Kindle with the included leather cover. Occasionally when you are positioning the device, it will fall out of the cover, not because it came detached, but because the whole back cover came off.

Other than a couple of small design problems, the device has still been extremely convenient, being able to have all your reading materials in one compact location.

4 out of 5 stars Kindle Review   July 20, 2008

Overall a neat little device. I bought this originally because I am a gadget type of person. If it is new I will probably try it.

I fell in love with it, with it's ease of downloading new books and clear easy to read fonts. Unfortunately, after a few days I lost custody of it as my wife will not let me use it. I guess I will have to buy a second one. Fortunately, with their easy to use DRM we will be able to share the content (I believe it is up to 6 Kindles per account).

As with everything there are a few negatives. I do not like the on/off switch being in back and the next page button is a little too big. But other than that it has been a positive experience for me.

I brought it to work to show a few co-workers and I think there will be a few future sales. I would highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars If you are an avid reader, you gotta have one of these!   July 20, 2008

I have been watching the kindle for almost a year. I've been lurking in the shadows, deciding pros and cons. I bought one last month. The pros outweigh the cons.
This thing is amazing. When I travel, my backpack doesn't weigh me down, because I already have about 50 entire books on my kindle - at a weight of 10.5 ounces. Wherever you are - waiting for a doctor appt, having your car serviced, waiting for a wreck to be cleared on the interstate - you have books available to you in the 3-4 seconds it takes to boot up. And, if you are reading book reviews in the newspaper and just "have to have" the newest tome from your favorite author, just click the button and, guess what happens? Almost instant gratification.
Yes, people complain about the buttons and want the kindle to be all things to all people, but it isn't. The kindle is for bookworms and people who LOVE to read, even if you only have a few minutes.
One of my doubts was how "friendly" an electronic book read could be. After all, when you bring home a new book, pour yourself a glass of sweet tea (I'm from Alabama) and open up the book that is an amazing experience. Guess what? The kindle ENHANCES the reading experience, in my opinion.
