4 out of 5 stars I'm at the theater!   May 12, 2008
Even though Blu-Ray won the format war, I still wanted a dual format player. You can find HD-DVD movies for 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of Blu-Ray discs. Not all titles are available in both formats either.
The 1080p,24FPS output in incredible looking. Very film like. I've paired this with Samsung's LED DLP rear projection monitor. The color accuracy and image detail equals or surpasses the image quality of many theaters. It's upscaling of standard DVD's looks a lot better than my other upscaling players that I've tried.
The firmware is easy to update. There are two ways to do it. Just plug it in to your switch/router. If you don't have a convenient way to connect the player to your network, you can download a cd-rom iso file from Samsung and burn an update disc. Just put the disc in the player and follow the on screen instructions. I've done the second procedure.
The down side is: No BD-R or HD-DVD-R compatibility (per manual). I haven't tried either yet to verify that fact.
DVD-R playback is marginal. It freezes occasionally. So I use my upscaling Pioneer DV-490V DVD player for home made discs (plays PAL/NTSC region free).
Because of the DVD-R playback compatibility problem, I gave four stars instead of five. Maybe a future firmware update will correct this problem.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC - SAMSUNG ROCKS! Forget Sony.   May 8, 2008

I bought this player because I had started to build my HD-DVD library quickly and I refused to buy a Sony after their suspicious back room deals with the movie studios. A problem I experienced with my Toshiba HD-DVD players (yes, plural) was that standard audio CD's would not play well and would have small pauses during playback. This Samsung plays everything perfectly.

For those people who have never experienced HD-DVDs, consumers lost out in this format battle. There is a lot more to just getting 1080p from a disc. The menus, pause, play, etc. are so much better on HD-DVD than Blu-Ray.

So, for those of you who are like me and have a few HD-DVDs or are buying them on fire sale now and want to also be able to play Blu-Ray discs, I do highly recommend this player. I am not a major audiophile so I cannot speak directly of it's technical abilities, but I just know that all my movies, regardless of format, look and sound great using this player in my home theater with 8' screen.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect   May 8, 2008
I've own this product for almost 3 weeks now and I've been happy with it. You hear all this stuff about audio limitation and it's true. It's quite annoying only hearing 2 channel on a "TrueHD" disc. But if you have a capable AVR, you can basically matrix the 2 channel into 5 channels and have a temporary audio solution until a firmware is out to fix it. It's not guaranteed that the "May firmware" will fix this audio issue, but there have been rumors that should at least pass-through for next gen audio.

Video-wise, the REON chip is absolutely amazing at upconverting standard DVDs, but of course it depends on the movie itself. Most newer movies have better quality to start with so with the upconversion, pictures look nearly HD on a 52" LCD. For a 32", I can barely tell any difference at all between HD vs. upconversion. Without saying much, it's a given that the HD DVD and Blu-ray video qualities are stunning. Upconversion of DVD-wise for the equipment I own, I would rank the BD-UP5000 first, then LG-BH200, HD-A35, HD-A2, and finally PS3.

I currently own a November 2007 build with firmware 1.2 and so far, I haven't had any problems with either HD DVDs nor bluray, except for imported HD DVDs such as T2 Ultimate Edition. But then again, it's not great to use that as a point of reference due to T2 Ultimate Edition using Dynamic HDi, which is a much more complicated menu system that is linked to web-accessible material.

If Samsung can really release a May firmware that fixes any audio issues and enabling next-gen audio pass-through, this would be an absolute 5-star product.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Built   May 4, 2008

I've been very happy with this product since I got it about a month ago. The picture quality of this unit is great and I Have not had any issues at all as some here may have said about their units. The built date for my unit is Feb. 2008 so perhaps that could have something to do with it.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PLAYER BEST I HAVE EVER USED   April 29, 2008

This player is great it loads fast and plays both blue ray and HD-dvd movies. Now i know what your thinking hd dvd is dead but the movies are cheap now and the quality is just as good as blueray so i have been purchasing alot of hd dvd movies and blue ray movies. This player loads the hd and blue ray disks very quickly about 10-15 seconds and upconverts standard dvd's very well. The audio is very good with either optical output or analog 5.1 audio outputs. The unit has a nice piano black finish with a silver edge around the front and the remote is easy to operate. This player is much better then the 1400 series model thats just a blueray unit that players remote is annoying and huge and the load time is longer and doesnt have all the same audio options.I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a top notch player at a great price!!!
