 Great Product with Slightly Quirky Software July 23, 2008

POSITIVES: This drive is small, light, silent, fast, and has lots of storage space. All the positives listed in other reviews have proven true and unexaggerated in my experience.
NEGATIVES: The Shadow backup software is quirky. When I programmed Shadow to back up the My Documents, Pictures, and Video folders on a Windows Vista computer, it did so but also backed up the Music, Pictures, and Video folders as subfolders within My Documents and gave them Windows XP style names (My Videos instead of Videos). Note that I never selected Music for backup, that Shadow was creating duplicate backups of the same files during the same backup, giving them new names, and putting them in new locations! That's unacceptable.
The issue was resolved when I selected the back up of only the My Documents folder and then later added the two desired media folders. The result was identical to the original "job" and yet produced a different result! My guess is that the version of Shadow (3.5.26.5) that came with my drive has some Windows XP oriented programming that gets confused on Windows Vista. Otherwise, Shadow is a very simple, easy-to-use piece of software that I anticipate will serve me well in the future.
OTHER: The two common complaints of a very short USB cable and less than the full 320 GB available are both true however, I don't think they're negatives. First off, this drive is designed for portability and as such, a short USB cord is ideal. It's long enough to plug into the back of my desktop and have the drive lay flat on the top of the desktop. Second, not having the entire storage size available for use is standard and has nothing to do with design or brand. The reason for it relates to how computer storage is measured and shouldn't be factored into any review.
SUMMARY: Excellent drive, though you may have to monkey with the Shadow software. The drive itself is 5 stars, the software drops it to 4 stars.

I bought this drive about two weeks ago and it works great. I plugged it in and was able to ignore the 'helpful' software. I use the device to back-up files by simply dragging them from one folder to the other. The device is quiet and doesn't heat-up.

A great product,fast transfer for big files...but the USB cable is too short,suitable for laptop not for PC.(have a look at the customer pics)

Hard drive works great...I think some people were having problems with have to install it every time they used it, not I (windows XP). Just plug it in and its ready to go. Only reason for 4 stars is it actually works out to be about 300 or 298 something GB. I knew this would happen, it's that way with all hard drives...but I did not expect a 20GB lose. That's like a whole hard drive to some people...

Book Worm
This is my first external drive, so I have nothing to compare it to, but so far I like this drive very well. It's small and extremely quiet. I was a little concerned about being able to copy large files (I have read that you need to reformat to NTFS format to transfer large files), but I am able to copy 60MB Photoshop files with no problem in the FAT32 format. I also read another review in which the reviewer said that he/she did not like the Shadow software and would much prefer to just drag and drop files. I have found that you can drag and drop with no problem, and you can use the Shadow software if you prefer to schedule regular automatic backups. I would have given the drive a 5 start rating if it were not for the ridiculously short USB cable that came with it. It's fine if you are using a laptop, but when I plug it into the front USB jacks on my desktop computer (forget about the rear jacks), the cable is not long enough for the drive to sit flat on my desk, and if I set it on the top of my computer, the cable blocks the DVD drive. It's crazy. But overall a good product, I just hope that it lasts awhile, since it seems that many of these external drives have a short life.
