Amazon.com Product Description The HL-5170DN from Brother is a network-ready monochrome laser printer with a high-quality print image and a number of expandability options. Resolutions run as high as 2,400 x 600 dpi, thanks to Brother's HQ1200 technology, resulting in accurate and crisp graphics and text. Print speeds of up to 21 ppm deliver jobs quickly so that you're free to focus on other tasks.p With the 133 MHz Fujitsu SPARClite processor and 32 MB of internal memory (upgradeable to 160 MB), the HL-5170DN is able to handle medium to large print jobs. Automatic duplexing allows you to easily print double-sided documents. A 250-sheet standard input tray is accompanied by a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray and a 150-sheet output tray. An optional 250-sheet tray is also supported. The printer accepts a wide variety of paper types, including plain paper, envelopes, bond, transparencies, labels, and card stock. Supported sizes include letter, legal, executive, A4, A5, A6, and B6.p The HL-5170DN connects to the host computer via parallel, USB, or 10Base-T Ethernet ports. An automatic interface switching feature means you don't need to adjust any printer settings when you change sources. The network interface allows you to print from any computer connected to the network and supports a wide range of networking protocols.p The 100/120 VAC 50/60 Hz power supply consumes about 460 watts of power during normal operation and about 75 watts during sleep mode. Compatible with PC, Mac, and Linux operating systems, the HL-5170DN also comes backed by a one-year limited Express Exchange warranty. p BWhat's in the Box/Bbr Printer, drum unit and toner cartridge assembly, quick setup guide, CD-ROM, AC power cord, user's manual; printer cable not included

Brother HL-5170DN laser printer May 22, 2007 Jay Lewis (Mililani, HI USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the best home laser printers purchased. Good on toner use. Still working well after 2 years.
Good Workhorse; Pricey Cartridges October 1, 2006 JTK Out West I bought this printer about two years ago and it has never failed me. My occupation is document intensive, so I need a dependable, high quality printer that won't jam or suffer from "work fatigue." Mac users might be interested in knowing that I use an iMac G5 (the one right before the Intel Model) and the 5170DN is totally compatible, including the duplex feature. I would have awarded this printer five stars, but there is a downside. The drum and cartridges are pricey and it seems that I need to replace the cartridges more often than indicated by Brother. I imagine if you are willing to use refurbished replacements, this is an excellent and inexpensive printer to own. Highly Recommended.
nice printer March 30, 2006 lisa haney (Boulder, CO United States) i got this printer 'cause my old HP was jamming, and this one works just fine... though I wish the cardstock didn't shoot out the back! Also, duplex printing on cardstock is a no-go, 'cause the duplex printing mechanism is at the top of the printer, where only regular papers can go. otherwise, it was fine to hook up (and i'm a mac person!), and i love the duplex feature when printing out regular documents. Saves paper. It's slower than I expected too, but that's 'cause I'm printing huge, super dpi images.... I guess that's as good as it gets.
Inexpensive network printer with duplex March 9, 2006 C. Kring (Sunnyvale, CA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this printer for a small software development office. It was relatively easy to set it up as a network printer and to configure WinXP and Linux clients to print. Most of our printing is text so we're not too picky but the print quality looks good and the printer is quiet and relatively fast. For us, the duplex feature was important to save paper. Not bad for a $400 laser printer. br / br /My only quibble is that it requires a USB cable (not provided) in order to configure it as a network printer because there are no front-panel controls. Since there is no warning on the box, you tend to find this out while you are in the middle of setting it up. In my case, I had to stop and come back the next day with a cable. Grrr. br / br /This printer is small and lightweight so I suspect it would wear out quickly with high use. Having said that, you could wear out and replace it several times and still save money over some of the other printers on the market.
