Some drawbacks September 16, 2008 J. Sayer (NC, USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Overall there is a lot of functionality in this machine. Also prints quickly (once it has warmed up which can take a bit). Print quality is acceptable for most purposes. The duplexing works well. I bought this after using a big HP inkjet AIO for years. My main problem with the inkjet was I didn't print often enough and the print heads would clog up. However, the HP AIO overall was very easy to work with. This AIO, not as easy. For instance, if I wanted to scan something on the HP, I could change settings from the printer console and send it to a standard network share. With the Brother, you have to configure it to email the file, FTP it, or send to a specific machine that has the Brother software installed on it and properly configured to exclude it from the firewall. Since I don't have an FTP server running, I have to use the Brother software route, and I really would prefer not to have this resource hog running all the time. Plus you can't control the settings from the printer itself! Even though it has 2 Start buttons - one for color, one for B&W - both do the same thing for scanning! Nor can you change the resolution. You can do this from your computer running the Brother software, but for me that means 1) going upstairs to put the document in the scanner 2) going downstairs to start the scan on the computer 3) going back upstairs to retrieve the document. The HP let me choose color/grayscale and resolution and duplex and everything right from the printer, the Brother is a pain. But what I really can't believe on a fairly pricey AIO is there is no way to find out how much toner is left. No status, no nothing. I was in the middle of printing hundreds of pages for a mailing and the printer told me it was almost out of black. Less than 20 pages later it just stopped. Since I was going to have to drive a good ways to get to Staples to get a new toner cartridge, I tried to check to see how much color toner was left and I was stunned that I couldn't. Rather than spend the nearly $300 on color cartridges at Staples when I picked up the black cartridge, I hoped for the best and decided to order some online for cheaper. When I got home from Staples and continued the print job, about 30 pages later it was out of color toner and I had to make another trip out. Great, thanks Brother! The configuration software and configuration via web-browser also leave a lot to be desired. Brother needs to spend some time looking at HP products to see how user-friendly devices work.
Fabulous Quality, Features and Price September 8, 2008 Amazon Junkie (Maryland, USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
As a Realtor I was looking for a way to bring my printing in-house on a large scale. I had been doing smaller jobs myself on a Photosmart, but for duplexing and image/text quality, not to mention speed, I knew I needed something bigger. Additionally, the ability to fax 40+ page contracts, either via straight fax or to email, was an absolute requirement. After extensive research, including printing my own document at various stores on various printers, I chose this printer and haven't looked back - the performance is spot-on! Being able to connect in a true wireless manner is a big plus. I also purchased the Brother LT100CL 500-Sheet Optional Lower Paper Tray and highly recommend it - this way, I can have legal paper in the integrated tray and letter in the add-on. All in all, I am extremely satisfied with this printer.
Hands Down, the best multi-function printer for the Mac September 3, 2008 Thomas Tomchak (Wheaton, IL USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This printer/scanner/fax/copy machine is pretty darn awesome. It's sometimes tough to find things that work so well with the Mac, but the features built in and the software included is as good as it gets. I liked it so much, that I purchased a second one for a client of mine in my office as a gift. I wish the price was about $100 cheaper, but even for the current price it's worth it (just makes it hard to buy more then one). We're using it with several Mac computers, from iMac and laptops to MacPro towers, and we're running both OSX 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard with no issues. We're just using it over the wired ethernet network and it acts as if each computer in the office had it locally attached. Great implementation. I have to say that this one printer has really made me a fan of Brother printers in general. Can you tell I like this printer?
Great Product! August 23, 2008 Ellen M. Mathers (Mountour Falls, NY USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Great all in one! We are using this in our office at the winery and this machine is working seamlessly! It's easy to install, copy, fax and even scan with. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an all in one laser printer. I wouldn't use it for heavy duty commercial use, but for an in home office or a small business office this machine definately is the cats meow!
As good as my old Brother MFC-8840D August 20, 2008 K. Vandenberk (Chicago, IL USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have used my old Brother MFC-8840D for 3 1/2 years with not an moment of trouble due to the machine itself. Reliable to the nth degree. I am an attorney in solo practice who absolutely depends on my printer for my professional existence. On my first day of use with this machine, I printed out perfect color reproductions of newspaper articles -- gorgeous! I didn't really think that color would make that big a difference, but it does. I got the new color printer so I can give my old one to my step-daughter who is also hanging up her shingle as a solo. I hope she'll have the same good luck that I did. Just like the new one, the old printer has the look and feel of a machine made by people who really care about reliability. I can't say enough good things about the Brother product.
