IPirates of the Caribbean: At World's End/I is a rollicking voyage in the same spirit of the two earlier IPirates/I films, yet far darker in spots (and nearly three hours to boot). The action, largely revolving around a pirate alliance against the ruthless East India Trading Company, doesn't disappoint, though the violence is probably too harsh for young children. Through it all, the plucky cast (Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush) are buffeted by battle, maelstroms, betrayal, treachery, a ferocious Caribbean weather goddess, and that gnarly voyage back from the world's end--but with their wit intact. As always, Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow tosses off great lines ; he chastises "a woman scorned, like which hell hath no fury than!" He insults an opponent with a string of epithets, ending in "yeasty codpiece."! p In the previous IDead Man's Chest/I, Sparrow was killed--sent to Davy Jones' Locker. In the opening scenes, the viewer sees that death has not been kind to Sparrow--but that's not to say he hasn't found endless ways to amuse himself, cavorting with dozens of hallucinated versions of himself on the deck of the Black Pearl. But Sparrow is needed in this world, so a daring rescue brings him back. Keith Richards' much ballyhooed appearance as Jack's dad is little more than a cameo, though he does play a wistful guitar. But the action, as always, is more than satisfying, held together by Depp, who, outsmarting the far-better-armed British yet again, causes a bewigged commander to muse: "Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?" As far as fans are concerned, it matters not. I--A.T. Hurley/I

A great trilogy to own in HD. If you have a HD TV and a blueray player, buy now.

5 out of 5 stars Good Buy   November 24, 2008

We own the whole collection of Pirates movies. In my opinion the first is the best. This was probaly my least favorite of the series. However it's still a good movie. I highly recommend Blu-Ray instead of DVD. The picture is fantastic, you won't regret it. I noticed someone else said the movie had issues playing on a PS3, that is what we use to pay our movies and we have had no problems.

5 out of 5 stars Birthday Gift   November 23, 2008

Great DVD. I paired up the DVD with br /The Captain Jack Sparrow talking doll br / for my brother as a birthday gift. br / He loved it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Disappointing DVD   November 23, 2008

FILM REVIEW (DVD review below): br / br /The "Pirates of the Caribbean" films are achievements in cinema, each grossing huge numbers at the box office (Dead Man's Chest-3rd Highest Grossing Movie ever worldwide) and have a dedicated, loving fanbase. I am a huge Pirates fan and I love the trilogy. Here, we have the 3rd installment, "At World's End", which is a direct sequel to "Dead Man's Chest". In "AWE", Will, Elizabeth, and Barabossa are off to rescue Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones Locker so that they reunite the Brethren Court so that they can finally rid the seas of Davy Jones and Lord Cutler Beckett. br / br /That's the main plot. Here, we find many, many subplots that confuse the audience and demand too much attention, and don't get it. Had questions at the end of "Dead Man's Chest"? Well, you may find yourself with a few at the end of this one. br / br /Pros: br /*Great acting from Depp and Rush plus another outstanding performance from Bill Nighy as Davy Jones br /*Fun-filled action and the best and most epic ship battle ever on film br /*A fun story that engages the audience emotionally br /*A fantastic musical score from Hans Zimmer br /*Many laughs, chills, and thrills that blow the rest of the movies out of the water br /*Plenty of emotion and fun br /*Keith Richards br / br /Cons: br /*Too many subplots br /*Too many new variables (Brethren Court, the Calypso plot, etc) br /*The new variables don't get much explaining br /*Although a bit much and complex, the plot needs strengthening br /*Some cheesy sequences br /*It "feels" different than the rest of the trilogy br /My rating: 4/5 br / br /DVD REVIEW: br / br /This 2-Disc "Limited Edition" offers the main film and a collection of special features. On Disc 1, we have the fantastic movie in 16x9 widescreen with 5.1 surround sound plus the feature "Bloopers of the Caribbean". Disc 2 features the goods. Unfortunately, the special features are in limited supply. Whereas P1 and P2 had hours and hours of bonus features, P3 has about less than 2 hours of bonus features. Most features are less than 10 minutes in length and the longest ("Anatomy of a Scene: The Maelstrom") is only about 20 minutes. Sadly, there is no "Making Of" feature (I guess some of the features from P2 count as P3 too). There's some cool features about the music of Pirates, a video about the "Many Jacks" scene, and some insight into the art and design. That's about it. Very disappointing but still a must buy for Pirates fans. All in all, this DVD set is good for Pirates fans but doesn't deliver like its predecessors. br /My rating: 3.5/5 br /
