5 out of 5 stars An excellent player !!   July 23, 2008

I did a lot of research before I bought a new player, and decided on the LG BH200. In the time i've owned it, its always worked great for me. Now keep in mind, you're going to want to update the firmware as it adds many new features and fixes a lot of compatibility with certain discs. Fortunately updating the firmware for the machine is pretty easy. You can a) connect the player to the internet and download it b) burn it on a cd or c) stick in a usb flash drive.

Don't be fooled by people complaining about the movie Sunshine. That problem was fixed months ago and in all fairness, it was the first disc to be BD profile 1.1. What is LG going to do, make a 1.1 profile player months before a single 1.1 profile disc exists? All Blu-Ray players need to be updated regularly since the format is still being developed, and this one is no exception.

LG has really done an outstanding job of continuing development for this player. With firmware updates they've added the ability to decode True HD, Dolby Digital plus, and DTS-HD all in 7.1 surround sound. They've also added BD Profile 1.1 compatibility (BD Profile 2.0 compatibility is on the way) and 24fps film mode.

You can also easily change some codes in the player to enable PAL playback and change the region of the DVD or BD. This little player can do Blu-Rays (Regions A, B, and C), HD-DVDs, Standard DVDs (All Regions, NTSC or PAL), and even DVD copies burned onto blank DVDs. The usb port is great for listening to mp3s or viewing pictures. It also does an awesome job upconverting any old DVDs you have.

Out of hundreds of HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays, the only disc i couldn't get to work with it was Clerks 2. Every other disc worked flawlessly without any dropouts or problems.

In short, if you want a great player that plays HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays, is profile 1.1 (and soon to be 2.0), and upconverts DVDs really well (including different regions and video formats), then this player is definitely one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Don't buy this player, unless you have a lot of HD-DVD's.   March 30, 2008

I was one of the many to back a format before the format war was over. I purchased the HD-DVD Player that works alongside the XBOX 360 and literally two months after I bought the player Warner Bros. announce it was going strictly Blu. This made my HD-DVD Player useless and my XBOX 360 useless since I only use to play home videos anyhow. The option of selling these HD-DVD's was out of the question and I couldn't even give them away if I wanted too. So, my only choice was to buy this player. Now, to be fair to both formats I can't tell the difference Audio or Video wise. This player does great with both formats and you will be pleased with the performance and if you already own an LG HDTV it also comes with a remote that can control both. Now a word of caution, if you own a Microsoft Zune or an Apple ipod the player does have a USB Port that will charge your device however it will not play music, movies, and JPEG's. Like the title says, if you own a Blu-ray Player now you have nothing to worry about because all the major studios are saying they'll back Blu Ray Discs but if you don't want to throw hundreds of dollars worth of HD-DVD invest in this dual player.

I purchased this player a few days ago. I decided to purchase this player instead of the Samsung combo player. Both players have issues but the Samsung appeared to have the bulk of them.

I tried the Ratatoiulle BD and it worked great. I didn't have the annoying camera icon everyone was talking about. There have been no audio or video drop outs, at least that have been noticeable. Hd-dvd menus are a bit sluggish, about the same speed as my hd-a2, but slower than my hd-xa2 (which I returned after the WB announcement). I have the first Pirates movie on BD and it looks AMAZING on this player, much better than on my PS3. While it still looked good, t whe PS3 bd image was always a little grainy (though not as noticeable to my wife!. Hd-dvd's such as Bourne Ultimatum look incredible.

As far as upconversion, this player is just as good, if not better than my old hd-xa2. It uses QDEO processing, which is very similar to HQV processing. You have all the same settings plus a little more! I tried various dvds, everything from Frasier to Finding Nemo. This player is great at upconverting.

If you have at least $225 worth of hd-dvd's or just want the best of both worlds, this player is for you. So far it plays all my discs without hesitation.
