Product Description This Pioneer Bookshelf Speaker System features a pair of speakers with Bass-Reflex enclosures, a type of speaker enclosure that includes a "tuned" port to increase and extend bass response (by releasing some of the energy created by the inward movement of the woofer cone). Bass reflex designs are more power-efficient than acoustic suspension designs. They will play louder than acoustic suspension speakers when driven with the same amplifier power. These speakers have a wide frequency response that can even handle the latest in high-resolution music, SACD and DVD Audio.

Great sound for the price January 20, 2007 Big Ed (Somerville, Ma. USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
It has a tweeter.LOL Fabulous. I purchased these a few weeks ago to add as a second pair to my system. Awesome, the 1 inch tweeter along with the 8 inch woofer, and 4 inch midrange really brings out the high end of the music.Didn't expect that tweeter. And the price was great. I looked at them at a local store, and they wanted $179 for the pair. Buying them here, I got a free speaker.
They sound great, after a little work and with a good amp... September 11, 2006 J (Central NC) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
My kingdom for less bass and insulation! Plain and simple, good stuff, bad set up. These things look like they would be impossible to pick up yet I can easily carry both of them in with the groceries ;). If the cases where say 3 times as thick, about 4" shorter and a good 2" thinner with some good factory insulation and a bass port about 1/4 the size they would have easily gotten 4 maybe 5 stars at this price... br / br /Bass ports (big ones mind you) on speakers this large are way overkill for a well rounded sound. When I first got them and hooked them up to my baseline pawn shop onkyo they sounded about like you would think "$50" speakers this size would sound (boom boom rah rah). I think the bass may have been over powering everything else. I removed the cones and found only a thin loose layer of insulation in the back. Well after lining each of them with about a half pound of fiberglass insulation they sounded oh so much more solid and clear (the wood box echo is gone). The mids came alive and after plugging the bass ports with some insulation I got the bass down where I wanted it. The bass (like the S-HF-21 I`ve reviewed) are quite tight and can really thump but not rumble. I would not recommend them for tv unless you don't mind sharp sounds or deep lows (or have a receiver you can set up fo tv). I'm currently driving them with the pioneer VSX-516-K/S (100 watt per channel / 7channel) receiver. They sound dynamite with a good receiver that can be adjusted/tuned or an equalizer and are well rounded for watching/listening to external media (DVD, CD ect...). You can play them loud but they kind of start sounding cheap, not bad at listening volume though. br / br /The only bad thing about them that can't be fixed is they are quite large for what you get. I think they could have eaisly fit the same deal into something 2/3 the size as stated above. br / br /I gave them 3 stars because they are not that great right out of the box with minimal electronics. But with some time, a dash of money, dust mask and a decent receiver they sound fantastic for the price.
