5 out of 5 stars JBL L830CH 6in 3way   July 8, 2008

The packaging came in and it was heavy. Oh my, oh my, the looks, the beautiful cherry finish is very eye catching. They look like miniaturize JBL L890 cherry towers. My wife was not happy when I said goodbye to my Bose cubes that I use for surrounds but when she saw my new babies, she like the looks of the L830's. They weight 22 lbs. each. but they are shorter and looks smaller compared to my JBL HT4V center chanel. Price wise, they are the Corvettes of the speaker category that won't cost you arm and leg but will compete with much expensive speakers. Very solid in construction and the sound is full range. The 830's are very well timbre match with L890 I quickly notice it when compared to my old Bose cube arrays (AM5). Some people will say the L830 are overkill for use as a surround but I swear they are just right specially if you listen to SACD and DVD audio it will make your hair stand. Did a test on these bookshelf speakers in my bedroom on stereo setting, all the detail of my music on DVD audio are intact but the lows are not as low compared to my L890 but is expected and my L830's are not fully break in yet and that will take at least three month or depending on the usage. I highly recommend this speakers and JBLs have been around producing quality speakers for movie theaters, concerts, and recording studios so you can never go wrong with this brand. I also suggest to choose the studio L's over the budget JBL line up if you have the money to burn and sometimes they are priced right if you are patient to shop around for bargain.

Well being the first review on the cherry model I will try to provide enough info. to make it informative while not being too full of "tech you knees".

First impression - they are heavy! The box containing both speakers weighed over fifty pounds. Bet ya I am on the UPS guys deliver last list now. The speakers weigh 22 pounds apiece which usually bodes well.

Appearance - nice. No vinyl and the wood veneer is finished well. One thing you do not notice in the picture is the sides are actually panels added to the main box very much like the Polk LSCI series which is not only eye catching but increases stability.

Quick look inside. Completely insulated, wiring done with thick wire, and internal braces large. JBL did a first class job in not cuttting any corners.

Now for the main event! How do they sound. Bi-wired them to a Pioneer Elite 84, did the set up and sat back. At first a little bright but not to worry you need to break in new electronics. Fast forward three days.....

The best thing about these speakers is nothing. Huh you say. They simply reproduce the sound spectrum accurately. Imaging and seperation is excellant with a wide sound stage. I bought these for my bedroom set-up to replace a pair of Polk Monitor 40s which are good speakers with most sounds but which seemed to stumble a little when hit with a full blast of symphony instruments seeming to lose a couple in transition while the JBLs reproduced the full range. Voices are clear, individual instruments distinct, doesn't wear your ears out and bass for a bookshelf is not bad.

While not quite as accurate as the Polk Rti 10s in my main set-up they work well and it would be hard to find a bookshelf that would put the Ls to shame.

Overall good construction, easy on the eyes, and pumps out some good sounds. Only downside is that if you decide to really rock the house they seem to lose a little something right below nose bleed level.
