Exceptional performance at a decent price January 21, 2006 Timothy J. Sutton (Cleveland, OH) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Let me begin by saying I'm an audio buff (both home and car) and I don't please easily. I'm very particular about natural sound reproduction, so that's where I'm coming from in this review. First, please don't dismiss these as merely a cosmetic upgrad to Polk's db line (I was turned off by the MOMO logo at first), they are a completely redesigned set of speakers with different tweeters, a much more sophisticated crossover network, and higher quality woofers (better cone, magnetic structure, etc). Now that that's been said, let's begin with the tweeters. I found the tweeters to be ridiculously bright for silk/poly domes, which caught me a little off guard. I would have expected this from titanium domes, but I digress. Their detail is incredible though. I found that I needed to use the -3db (the crossovers offer 0, -3, -6db) attenuation to take a bit of the shrillness out of the tweeters. The tweeters are extremely capable and well defined, just a bit over the top at the stock setting. The system handles the 125w RMS (from my PPI PCX-4125) I'm sending admirably, and with low distortion (they will begin to clip at the top of their power band, but that's expected). By the way, you don't need an amp that pushes 125w to get these components to sing, its almost overkill actually. The woofers, being a carbon fiber weave are far superior in weight and rigidity to poly and other injection molded comsumer grade woofers, these are simply in a different class altogether. The upshot? They hit harder and sound cleaner while being more efficient then their plastic cousins. Speaking of efficiency, they can play uncomfortably LOUD with a low gain setting (remember folks, I have between 125-150w RMS going to them, so of course my gain would be low). One thing to note is that they take about 20-30 hours to break-in before they really open up. Believe me, it makes a big difference. With that said, the mid-bass is impressive even before they seat themselves completely. I have them filtered at 60hz, which I find is the perfect balance between performance and protection. There's no need to send them bass they can't handle, you can't easily hear, and that will tax them unnecessarily. These aren't subwoofers, and shouldn't be treated as such. The midbass is full, accurate, and faithful to the music (if you want boomy, save your money and buy Kicker). Besides, I'm adding a JL Audio 10W3V2 (powered by a JL 250/1) subwoofer to round out the system. These components work very well without a sub though. One thing to note about mounting. The woofers are deep and have large magnets, so they may be a bit tricky to install in certain cars. They do have a magnet dust boot that is removable for tight installations, so Polk didn't completely leave you high and dry. The crossover networks are much nicer and a good deal more sophisticated then their db series cousins. Be warned, these crossovers are rather large, so placement may be an issue. I would recommend against putting them in the doors, because you can't access the tweeter adjustments easy. Consider placing them under the dash. Conclusion: Overall, the Momo series Polk components are the most natural sounding speakers in their price range and a real steal. Let me put it this way, they compare favorably to MB Quartz' Premium line, which says it all. Thanks for the read.
