Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The M170 sleek headset is ideal for use either in your car or with selected DECT phones. It is compatible with all headset-ready cellular, PCS or cordless phone, i.e., equipped with a jack for plugging a headset directly into the phone. For cellular and PCS phones that are not headset-ready, you will need a headset adapter with a built-in headset jack. The M170 incorporates the versatile headset that can be converted from headband to over-the-ear style and features an adjustable microphone boom and an advanced speaker technology that protects hearing. The Plantronics RF Noise Shield reduces annoying RF static noise. The microphone possesses an adjust switch for optimal voice output. The headset is compatible with telecoil-equipped hearing aids. It also has the special clothing clip for added stability on the move.

4 out of 5 stars Very good basic headset   November 15, 2008

I've used both the M170 and M175C headsets extensively -- the 175 is the same except for adding listening volume control and mic mute switch on a pod in the middle of the cord. br / br /Both headsets are comfortable enough to wear all day (with headband), sound great receiving and good transmitting, and have effective noise-cancelling. The 170 is simpler and does not have the volume/mute pod swinging around on the cord, and the 175 adds the convenience of these functions. Over a period of years, the volume control can get scratchy, so the 170 lasts longer. br / br /The main fault of both headsets is that the mic volume isn't quite loud enough, even with the mic switch on max. I'm not even sure why there is a mic switch -- it NEVER needs to be turned down. When the other person has trouble hearing me, I unplug the headset and use the phone directly, and the volume increases noticably for them. This is usually not a problem unless the other person is in a noisy environment, but I wish the headset mic would be as loud as the phone mic. Perhaps this is a side-effect of the noise-cancelling mic feature and would require an amplifier to overcome. If I could buy a battery-powered supplemental mic amp, I would. Plantronics, are you listening? br / br /I'm about to buy another M170 as my old one has bit the dust. The way these headsets have died for me is by rough treatment causing damage to the plug or plug wire, or -- on the 175 -- the volume control getting scratchy. Overall, this is a very good headset and the best value I know for the money.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Little Headset   May 3, 2008

This lightweight little headset has two wearing options -- neither of which tangle into and pull hair-- volume adjustment and transmits clear sound both ways. Cannot evaluate its longevity yet but so far I am very happy.

The Plantronics M-170 works extemely well with both our Uniden cordless and Motorola cell phones. It is comfortable and I am able to hear clearly. br /Those I speak with also state they hear me clearly. This is the second Plantronics headset and they both have worked well!!

5 out of 5 stars My Experience after 6 Years of Use... Best I ever had...   August 3, 2007

Well my M170 lasted about six years. It was tossed around the vehicle and generally being used in a rough manner before the wire near the 2.5mm plug finally gave way. Man this unit was a trooper. I used it in my car with the effective although somewhat "dorky" looking metal headband. The unit always sounded good both sending and receiving. I went out and bought several earpieces after my 170 died including the highly touted Etymotic ER22. None of the headphones worked as well as the 170 did. The 170 worked very well in my noisy vehicle and my truck driver friend said he could always hear me well on this unit. After many dollars later and much frustration trying newer designed headsets, I decided to go back with the 170... but wait! Now Plantronics has a M175C which looks to be the same unit but adds a volume control and a mute button. I bought it and will write up a review of the unit later after I have used it a bit. Back to the 170 though... The 170 also comes with an ear hook which looks more stylish than the metal headband. I used the metal headband and it's padded leather earpiece when I used the headset It is very comfortable to wear for those really long conversations. I'm talking about hour plus conversations and beyond. br / br /I highly recommend this unit and give it five out of five stars.
