Amazon.com Product Description
Equipped with a number of features that enhance the movie-viewing experience, the Sony DVP-NS300S DVD player offers sophisticated function at an entry-level price. The unit includes a 10-bit/27 MHz video digital-to-analog converter, which smoothly re-creates the color gradations and contrast of the source material for a superior picture. It also employs block noise reduction, which minimizes the information bits that often interfere with DVD images, along with a component video output that ensures the highest possible picture clarity through your TV. p The DVP-NS300S also offers a host of audio enhancements, including Dolby Digital and DTS outputs that deliver 5.1-channel surround when connected to a compatible receiver. The unit also contains Digital Cinema Sound--which replicates the acoustic performance of Hollywood's greatest sound stages--and virtual surround for users who want to simulate 5.1-channel sound in a two-speaker setup. Parents will rest easy with the included parental lock feature, while everyone will appreciate the CD and DVD Text options, which displays artists, titles, and even jacket covers on the front panel and TV screen. p In addition to the component-video output, the DVP-NS300S offers an S-video output and two composite outputs, along with both an optical and coaxial digital output. Other features include instant replay, a quick setup function, and a multibrand remote control. And people with old DVDs and CDs needn't fret, as the player's Precision Drive 2 system reads discs that are in less-than-perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback. p bWhat's in the Box/bbr DVD player, A/V cord, remote control, two AA batteries, user's manual.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player!   July 26, 2005
sethn172 (Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, USA)
My university's library has a bunch of these players in the media room for personal viewing. What I like about this player so much is that it looks sleek, and willing to play your movies! You can navigate DVD menus without a remote - just use the joystick-like control on the unit (easy to use, BTW). I've watched many movies on that machine (like "Airplane!," "Back to the Future Trilogy," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "The Incredibles," etc.) and watched a couple of movies in Spanish sound with English subtitles. Best of all, when the DVD changes layers on a dual-layered disc, it's just a one-second pause - no "check for scratches" warning or anything! It's too bad this player was pulled from production a few years ago but oh well.

4 out of 5 stars Reads My DVD+R Discs Flawlessly....   April 1, 2005
"The Woj" (Downers Grove, IL)
Great dvd player for the price. We needed a basic DVD player for my children's TV, a player that could also read DVD+R back-up discs cd-rs (as well as deal with my children's daily abuse). br /The Sony has worked flawlessly. It plaus our Ridata DVD+R discs without a hithc. We have now owned the player for 6 months with no problems. The operation is simple; and the remote control is also easy to program and utilize. For anyone interested in a basic player at a good price, look no further than this unit.

3 out of 5 stars Unexciting   December 23, 2002

First off, when you turn the unit on, it is not really on. It requires at least another button press before it decides to turn "on".pHowever, the worst aspect about this product is it takes forever for the tray to eject from a cold boot. For example, I click the power button. But the unit is not on, it is on "standby". Then I click the eject button, and it takes an agonizingly long time for the tray to eject. This sort of defeats the purpose of even having DVDs. I mean, one of the great aspects of DVDs is to be able to quickly locate a favorite scene. I don't want to have to fumble around with the hardware and WAIT while salivating about which scene I want to watch.pIt plays DVDs ok, but so does my friends really cheap panasonic, which ejects much faster than this unit. You click the eject button and wham! there the DVD is ejecting. pI have to admit, we live in a world of buttons. You click a button, and something is supposed to happen. Sony seems to have subverted this logic because when you click a button on this product, NOTHING happens.pLame.

5 out of 5 stars The NS300 can actually read CD-R's   October 15, 2002

I'm just writing to correct some information written by other reviewers... This DVD player does indeed read CD-R's, I have verified it with burned VCD's I have created. (But not SVCD)pI suppose wether or not it works may depend on the brand of CD-R media you are using, but at least the Sony CD-R's media works flawlessly for me.pOverall this is a great player for the price. It's easy to use, has great picture quality, and I have yet to find a DVD movie that it will freeze on. (Except when caused by disc scratches) I'm very satisfied.
