Awesome Media Center! November 22, 2009 Henry Tomasi After much research I decided on the Sony BDP-460. Set up was super easy due to reading previous reviews. Hooked it up to Apple Airport express bridging to my wireless network. The N460 went to the internet without any problems, got the firmware update in minutes. Blue Ray disk loaded in 45 seconds.
br /
br /The image quality is of course unbeatable.
br /
br /Netflix, Amazon on demand took a few minutes to register -- I had to sign in via computer on both services etc. but once that was done I was good to go.
br /
br /Having tested both Netflix and Amazon streaming, I much prefer the Amazon signal. The Amazon HD stream is very impressive on this machine via HDMI!
br /
br /There are a bunch of other streaming services that come with this thing that I haven't even gotten around to testing yet. Overall it's an awesome Blue Ray / Internet media center.
4 stars rather than 5 stars because of YouTube November 21, 2009 Roy R. Platt (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sony Bravia-Sync made it VERY easy to hook up the Sony BDP-N460 to my Sony Bravia KDL-32XBR6 HDTV. I used Mediabridge HDMI and Ethernet Cables (from Amazon).
br /
br /The Mediabridge cables came in cardboard boxes that were easy to open and recyclable. Both the Sony BDP-460 and the Sony KDL-32XBR are Energy-Star rated.
br /
br /Sony recommends buying a Sony USM2GL external memory to "to enjoy additional content (such as BONUS VIEW/BD-LIVE) on certain Blu-ray Disc titles".
br /
br /It was VERY easy to set up Amazon Video-On-Demand, but it is much easier to search Amazon Videos-On-Demand using a computer than it is to use the "search" function on the Sony BDP-N460. After using a computer to find the video that I wanted to watch, the video was VERY easy to play on the Sony BDP-N460.
br /
br /The 'search" function on the Sony BDP-N460 uses an onscreen keyboard that is like a touch-tone telephone dial. When searching, you cannot enter more than 19 characters, including spaces. This seems to be a major fault that hopefully will be corrected soon. The onscreen keyboard also does not include some characters that I have used in my various passwords.
br /
br /YouTube is particularly awkward when using the Sony BDP-N460. Sony should adopt the 15 year old technology used in WebTV and MSNTV2 units. The Sony remote already has all of the right buttons.
Super Easy Setup for Blu-Ray Internet November 20, 2009 W. Frank (Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When the price dropped below $200, I jumped and bought this puppy. All the setup went so smoothly.
br /
br /- It figured out to use 1080i over HDMI for my older Sony TV
br /- I plugged in my Linksys Bridge which I had unplugged from my DirecTv HR21 moments before, and
br / it connected to internet without me doing a thing.
br /- Swapped Optical Audio Cable from my DVD player, and that worked perfectly.
br /- Updated firmware to v.120; took about 3 minutes
br /- Tested it with first DVD I ever bought. Batman and Robin, bought 11 years ago. Played perfectly.
br /- Incredible amount of Trailers, TV and Music available through Internet connection for free
br /
br /Now to head to Frys and see what Blu-Rays are on sale.
br /As of Nov. 20 Amazon has large number of Blue-Rays for sale at $10, why stream for $14.95 ?[...]
br /
br /Only Negative so far is no EJECT on the Remote
Sexy, Amazing Entertainment November 20, 2009 I. Randolph S. Shiner (Del Mar) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I received the player this afternoon; by this evening, I had hooked the whole thing up to my Denon receiver with 6.1 surround and was not only amazed with the quality of the upconversion of DVDs (Yellow Submarine - perfect) and audio output, though I have no Blu-ray discs yet. What sets this unit apart from any other piece of A/V equipment I have ever dealt with is the nearly complete integration with the internet, though I do wish there were more choices for internet video offered, as for example Hulu and probably some others. Regardless, the setup of the player itself was very simple, the online setup of my Netflix account -- once I did the firmware upgrade that was easy as anything -- as well as the video quality of the movies that are there is all very, very good. Indeed excellent. The setup of my Slacker and Amazon VOD accounts were likewise very simple. While Netflix is not perfect HD, what I sampled tonight is perfectly watchable. I've read elsewhere that people are dissatisfied with the remote. Get over it. It serves its purpose well. The fact that it's missing an eject button only means that you have to insert each disc one at a time, which requires a trip to the player either way, to put it in or take it out. It's not that big a deal and those who quibble about that are just quibbling over nothing. That it "feels cheap" is also ridiculous. It's a remote, for God's sake, not Lenox china. This is an amazing player out of the box and I can't imagine spending 6x the money and being any happier with this purchase. And I hate Sony for all the usual reasons people hate Sony. Albeit a little less after this evening's experience. Good on them. Great machine. Well done. I can't wait for Wall-E in Blu-ray.
Easy WiFi Set-up does NOT mean WiFi is built in November 14, 2009 Richard Ozminkowski Jr. (Lodi, CA) 5 out of 14 found this review helpful
My fault. I had spent a considerable amount of time reviewing Blu-ray units. It seems the Samsung models (reportedly) had their networking issues. Then I finally decided on a Sony Bravia LCD TV, so it seemed logical to narrow in on the Sony Blu-ray units (one less remote to fumble with). After considering the BDP-S560 for a while, the N460 showed up as an option. I liked that is had the streaming from Netflix, etc. It was also listed as "Easy WiFi Setup". I ordered it. I didn't read all of the fine print - WiFi required a linksys WET-610 - thats another $100. Not even the Sony web site makes that clear when you do a comparison among the models.
br /
br /I already have a Roku box for Netflix (Which has been a GREAT investment, something I highly recommend) so the Netflix access in the Blu-ray unit was trying to think ahead as more services become available.
br /
br /While I can't assess the quality of the unit, I did put a rating that reflects my disappointment. I am returning the unit as it arrived this afternoon. I will likely go with the Sony BDP-S560. If you don't need WiFi, the unit may be just fine.
