Amazon.com Product Description BEarly Adopters Pick: May 2003/B. This is the first DVD player with a built-in hard drive recorder, allowing you to record all your favorite shows onto digital disk as well as watch DVDs. p Talk about "all in one"--the Panasonic DMR-E80HS not only records DVDs and stores more than 100 hours of audio/video programming on its built-in memory; it's also a progressive-scan DVD Iplayer/I (for use with high-definition or HD-ready TVs) that also handles your DVDs, CDs, and MP3 recordable discs. With the DMR-E80HS's 80 GB hard drive, it provides up to 104 hours of recording time, plus up to 6 hours on a removable 4.7 GB DVD-RAM disc (in Extended Play mode in each case). The DMR-E80HS offers the flexibility of recording on both DVD-RAM--perfect for instant chapter access and for multiple rerecordings--as well as DVD-R, widely regarded as the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats (great for sharing camcorder footage with loved ones).p Panasonic's Time Slip feature lets you use your DVD recorder like a personal video recorder, or PVR. Because of DVD-RAM's extremely fast transfer rate, you can view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while still recording the program in progress. In addition to recording new video content, the DMR-E80HS lets you transfer your favorite VHS recordings to durable, space-saving discs. Personal movie libraries and family videos can be archived, preserved, and easily cataloged and accessed. Picture-enhancing technologies include 3D noise reduction, block noise reduction, and mosquito noise reduction.p With the Direct Navigator you can instantly access recorded material from an onscreen menu that lists recording dates, times, channels, and titles. Finding and viewing recorded material is simple because there's no need to search, fast-forward, or rewind. You can even perform simple non-linear video editing, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, and creating custom playlists of favorite scenes on a disc.

how to resolve the recover issue October 26, 2008 non reviwer(NJ) (non reviwer(NJ)) My recorder started going to self check mode and then says bye... left it like that for a while. Today decided to repair myself. The root cause of this , the dvd is stuck inside the dvd drive. the unit is not able to open after that. every time I turn the power it goes into infinite self check mode. I opened the top case and then the front case. Aftre this i removed the screws that hold the dvd burner TOp cover and pulled the Stuck DVD myself. It is working fine after that..
Worked great since the beginning September 23, 2008 J. Baxter (Lansing, Michigan United States) I've had this recorder since 2004 and it's never failed yet. I've probably recorded over 200 DVDs with it and hours of TV on to the HDD. I've had glitches with it, but unplugging it and plugging it back it always seems to fix any problems. The only real problem I've had is with blank DVDs. If you buy the cheap ones, the discs will fail after 6 months to a year!! They will play fine at first and than the picture will start to freeze up and finally will just quit all together. br / br /The ones to buy are the Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs. I've never had one of these discs fail after being recorded. I've also discovered that is best to format the HDD every so often and clean the DVD laser lens with one of the lens cleaning discs. br / br /The other thing to keep in mind is, do not put this machine where it can't ventilate itself well. If you block the fan on vents on the back or put it next to a heat source and let it over heat, it will fail!

I got my Panasonic about 3 years back to transfer all my home-recorded video tapes, and there were a LOT of them. I figure I must have recorded nearly 150 DVD's - many of them with multiple titles. I know that because of the era this unit was manufactured that 480p was the best resolution of the time, and this sometimes reveals itself on playback on my 37" 720p TV. Nothing I can do about that and I'm glad I have digitized some of my never-have-again programs recorded on VHS in the 80's and 90's, as well as my parent's old 8mm movies from the 40's thru 70's. A few months ago I had a problem with lockup during playback and after stumping my local repair shop (even after they contacted Panasonic) I sent it to Panasonic in CA for repair. They replaced a board and $130 later I have a working unit again. I get the definite impression that Panasonic is fully aware of this bug but isn't about to initiate a service bulletin because of the age of the product. I can't complain too loudly after all the unit has done for me, but I'm waiting for the next generation of higher def recorders (not upconverters). I pray that the market will continue to support standalone DVR/DVD-R's in a world of Tivo subscriptions.
Been a trooper December 31, 2007 Tommy A. Richards 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this unit for many years now. It has never failed me. We have watched thousands of movies and recorded shows weekly for years without the first problem. br / br /I am looking forward to the HD version when it arrives. If it is half as good as this one, it will be GREAT!
