3 out of 5 stars LG support is useless!   November 28, 2006

Received the device. Hooked it up. Didn't work. Tried several different configurations of cabling and it didn't work. This being my first DVR, I thought there was a chance that I screwed something up, so I called LG tech support. After waiting on hold for 10 minutes, their recording says "leave your phone number and we'll call you back." I did that several times over the next 3 days--no response. I sent them 3 separate emails during that time frame as well. On the 4th day I finally got through and the lady says "oh, that's a computer product, you'll need to talk to them and they are gone for the day--you should call back early in the morning and somebody should be there." So I was forced to call from work which I was not happy about since I couldn't immediately follow any instructions from tech support--which didn't matter since the guy said "it's broken, ship it back to the vendor and get it replaced." br /I decided to try a few different things to set it up before I sent it back and finally got it working. br /For the price it appears to be a decent unit. For the most part it is user friendly, but is really lacking some basic features (no customizable channel list(s) is my main problem). I'm HOPING that LG will continue to add/adjust the user interface, but I have a feeling this model will be EoLed pretty quick and I'll be stuck where I'm at. br /LG will be last on my list when making any purchases in the future.

4 out of 5 stars OWNED FOR 4 MONTHS AND I LOVE IT   November 24, 2006

After several months, I thought I should update my review: br /If you like TIVO, you'll love this . . . and you don't have to pay a subscription fee. This unit is awesome and I just ordered a second refurbished one from Amazon for my bedroom. br /1. It accepts inputs from both satellite and cable AT THE SAME TIME (though it records only one show at a time of course). (Yes, I have both) br /2. The Microsoft Program Guide is FREE so you don't need a subscription and don't need to do anything to active it - it is automatic - and gets the information for BOTH my satellite and cable provider. br /3. It must, MUST, be hooked up to the internet via wired or wireless the first time you set up the unit or it will not work at all. (Make sure you buy one of the wireless links LISTED IN THE BOOK or hook it up to your router). It uses my broadband wireless to update the program guide every night and keeps two weeks of programming information for BOTH my cable provider AND my satellite provider (it brings up your provider choices based on your zip code). The service is intuitive, attractive and easy to use. You can tell it to record every instance of a show or only when it plays on a particular channel or only first run episodes. You get a complete show title, description and even original air date. It has every feature of TIVO except it does not recommend shows to you - big deal, I wouldn't pay a subscription just for that. My PROS and CONS remain except for the picture quality comment, which I discovered is my crappy satellite provider (DIRECTV PUERTO RICO.) br /4. You can watch recorded shows while recording another, but you cannot watch one live show while recording another. If you are watching another channel when a recording is ready to start, it asks if you still want to record the scheduled show. br /5. You can tell it to record by selecting a show from the guide, searching by entering show names or using time, dates and channel just like an old VCR (not sure why you'd do that, though). br /6. The remote is attractive, comfortable in your hand, well laid out and easy to use. br /7. You have several recording qualities to choose from, but I only record on the highest settings and haven't yet come close to filling it up. It has 160 Gigs, among the largest out there. br /8. It controls my satellite receiver. br / br /I think this is a REMARKABLE machine and at $200 it is by far the best deal out there. I've never had even one glitch. br / br /*My original review: br /PROS: br /1. Very convenient - no need to stockpile or swap-out DVD's/Tapes, which was my primary reason for buying it. It records over a hundred hours of TV. br /2. Very easy to use - select a show or entire series (choose first runs only or with repeats). MS Guide is a snap and is accurate, even when Direct TV INFO is not. Or you can use time and channel to record. The MS GUIDE is completely free now. br /3. Live TV rewind, pause, playback, etc (you know, TIVO like except it doesn't go find the shows you like.) br /4. Tell it to record and forget about it. Doesn't matter if the unit is left on or off. br /5. Two weeks of Guide downloaded in under two minutes via DSL. br /6. Customer service was responsive, pleasant and helpful to me when I called them. br / br /CONS: br /1. Picture quality isn't what I would prefer. It isn't BAD, it just isn't great. (The primary reason it didn't get FIVE stars.) br /2. It takes more than a couple seconds to change the channel. (The second reason it didn't get FIVE stars). br /3. You MUST initially set-up the unit while connected to the internet or it won't set up at all. HOWEVER, after setting it up, you can disconnect it from the Net. Within two weeks the guide will be empty, though, and you'll have to use time/channel record. br /
