First one DOA, second one worked fine for about 6 months August 22, 2008 B. Cox (Philadelphia) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was a Christmas gift; the first one was DOA. I thought it was the remote, but it was the recorder itself that was bad. So I exchanged it. The new one worked fine for about 6 months, then it started screwing up: anything I played looked fine, but the audio was delivering at about 20% of normal volume. I had encountered that before, with certain discs; this was universal. Any disc I put into it had to be cranked up to the limit to be heard at all, and even then I missed a lot. I am currently involved in negotiating for repairs. After eight months and a DOA? Jesus, Toshiba, who are you trying to kid? IT'S JUNK!! This company can build a reliable nuclear reactor, but can't do a DVD recorder? The heck with it-I'm switching to Sony.
Love it! August 2, 2008 Sue (Alaska) I have had this for just about a year now, and am really happy with it. It is super easy to use for those of us who are technically challenged, and I especially like that you don't have to finalize discs like I did with my old one. It plays both pro and recorded discs with no problem. I am about halfway through transferring my family video library (no small feat!) and it still works like a charm, and my dvr addicted husband loves it for recording his stuff from tv. We get really good quality even on slow speed. Well worth the money.
Best low cost DVD recorder! July 4, 2008 F. Portell I've been using dvd recorders for several years. This one is great. It makes excellent quality recordings with no hassle. I think the fact that it doesn't have a tuner makes it easier to operate. It has a nice option that will allow it to start recording if it senses a signal if a satellite or cable box turns on so you don't have to set up any timers if you use the timer feature on your cable box. 1) Put in a blank DVD 2) Pick the quality (I use 2 hour for most everything 3) Push the red record button to start recording (you can press pause during commercials) 4) When you're done push stop. If you don't want to add anything else to the dvd, go to the dvd menu and choose finalize to make the dvd compatible with other dvd players. That's it. My 8 year old makes recordings with it. Here are my only minor criticisms: - It would be nice if there was a 3 hour recording mode instead of having to jump from 2 hour to 4 hour but I would still describe the 4 hour as quite good quality. - I wish the remote had a finalize button on it. - The menu it creates is text with no picture/preview on DVD+R. I think preview/picture icons appear when using a DVD+RW.
