Product Description Panasonic DMR-EZ28K 1080p Upconverting DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner - (DMREZ28K) Features: 1080p Up-Conversion By interpolating video data using proprietary algorithms, SD format data is up-converted to 1080 x 1920p HD format video data. This conversion increases the richness of the original data by almost six fold, producing the highest possible image quality when viewing content on a large-screen HDTV. Digital Tuner Capable The high-performance hybrid digital tuner is capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. And even when digital signals drop out because of interference with direct signal access, which makes the picture either disappear or become filled with block noise, the Digital Tuner still produces a beautiful picture. Easy Operation with VIERALink Connect your Panasonic DVD recorder to your VIERA flat-panel HDTV via an HDMI cable, and the TV channel setting information is automatically downloaded to the recorder. Once the Auto Preset Download is complete, the DVD recorder will keep whichever TV channel you're watching as its receiving channel. This means you can record the program you're watching by just pressing the Record button on the VIERA remote. With VIERALinktrade;, you don't have to worry about setting the recorder to the right channel every time you want to record something. Expansion of Usages The Panasonic DMR-EZ28V DVD recorder is equipped with an SD Memory Card slot and USB terminal, which makes it easy to view photos from your digital camera. Just slip the SD card into the slot or use the cable to connect the camera to the USB terminal, and you're ready to enjoy a spectacular big-screen slideshow with family and friends. You can even listen to music recorded onto a USB device while viewing your photos. Universal Design All of our DVD recorder models are designed in compliance with Panasonic's Universal Design principles. Frequently used buttons (Power, Open/Close) are located at the top o

Way Better Than a VCR But Tuner Could Be Improved November 19, 2009 S. Depaola (NY) The good - Nice quality recordings. Nice recordings menu. VCR-like operation
br /
br /The bad - Questionable digital tuner. DVD-RAM's not widely available. Too many menus and sub menus and poor naming of buttons is confusing
br /
br /This is my first DVD recorder, and as a long time Panasonic user I thought this was the natural choice. Overall I'm a satisfied customer. It serves its purpose of replacing the outdated VCR but falls short in a few areas. As a result, I don't usually turn the thing on unless I'm recording something. I'd rather watch HDTV straight on my Samsung 1080p 40 incher to avoid the EZ28's digital tuner that has less than stellar picture quality along with an annoying and unpredictable delay when changing channels. And because I suspect the Panny's DVD burner drive will eventually wear out rendering this unit pretty much worthless, to avoid unnecessary wear and tear I prefer to play my DVD's on my older Progressive Scan player. The unit has locked up on me once over the last month since I've had it, requiring pushing the reset button (thankfully that did not wipe out my stored channels which took quite a while to scan then manually remove all the blanks).

br /This unit has HDMI upconvert using its HDMI output. So I did an A/B comparison between my old player and the new Panny and was disappointed to see really no difference. Perhaps this is not the player's fault but just due to the overrated hype surrounding upconvert players. I'm not sold that upconverting to 1080p is any better than an ED (480p) picture; it's probably more marketing than good technology. This player limits recordings to the square-ish 4:3 format with every recordable disc type except for DVD-RAM's which you can only mail order as far as I can tell (I got mine from Amazon). Pretty much encourages you to use these discs which is fine for home use, but cannot be "finalized" for playing on any other DVD player. It will accept cartridge or disc style DVD-RAM's.

br /Now about that tuner- The specs don't say but I believe that this is a full HD tuner which should pass HD signal through in high def out to the HDTV, even though the recordings are down-converted to 480i. However the HD picture quality is not near the (top rated) quality of my Samsung set, and worse sometimes the picture gets slightly glitchy and lower, softer resolution as if a buffer is getting full. I see no such defects with the same RF (analog cable with HD content) input signal to my HDTV. Admittedly I'm picky with picture quality, others might not notice it. Then sometimes the picture is perfectly stable and acceptable (albeit a little soft), plenty good enough since it's recording in 480i anyways. The channel switching errors are irritating, sometimes the thing goes up only one or two channels when you pressed it three times, and other times the screen goes blank a couple of times between channels. So you have to change channels s-l-o-w-l-y. C'mon now Panasonic, with all the HDTV's you build you can do better than this! Although it will suffice I would not recommend this EZ28 paired with a non-tuner HD monitor or you WILL become frustrated if you have to rely on this thing for constant up/down channel surfing. Directly entering the channel is a bit better however they omitted a "last" channel button.

br /On the positive side, I love the recordings menu that displays what has been recorded on the disc in nice little boxes. This menu is accessed with the "Direct Navigator" key (go figure?) Each video box is complete with sound, the channel name, show title and date recorded. When you highlight a box, that video starts in motion and the others go still. Now this really blows away the old VCR. The recorded video quality is surprisingly good, almost high def looking in 16:9. I watched my recording of the World Series in 1.3X speed with sound (this mode only available with DVD-RAM's) and the slow game of baseball was more enjoyable that way. The Schedule screen (timer recording) function is quite nice and has been reliable. The unit has a good, clear on-screen information display including upcoming shows, remaining disc time, recording quality setting, etc. however Panasonic confusingly chose to name this key "Status" instead of Display (that key is used for displaying (and changing) disc settings).

br /I have not tried the SD card or USB MP3/JPEG picture viewer functions as my Samsung has this if and when I want to see a slide show. However I was disappointed to learn that the unit cannot record video to this media as it does with DVD's. With growing SD and USB drive capacity compared to DVD's fixed 4.7 gig, this would have been a great recording alternative with no moving parts. But then we wouldn't need to keep buying these Panasonic DVD-RAM's would we?
I can't live without a DVD Recorder!! November 3, 2009 T.Y. (Southern California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had a previous generation of this Panasonic DVD Recorder. It did great for 2 years, and then one day, I put a disk in and there was a funny noise, and kaput! I knew that I wanted another Panasonic because I was hoping that the disks that I hadn't finished would still work in a new DVD Recorder, and they did! I hope that this one lasts for at least 2 years. I think this one has a new special feature for when there is a disk problem, which happened on the second or third disk. Other then that, it has performed wonderfully, and I expect that it will continue to do so.
Memorex DVD+RW October 20, 2009 Richard L. Tom Memorex DVD+RW worked well in this machine once the DVD was formatted (each time). However when I recorded from my Sony rdr vxd655 the Panasonic would not play it back. It would say nothing had been recorded and to record I would have to format prior to recording even though it had previously been formatted. I brought it to Best Buy for repair but after 3 weeks they said the machine was ok but that I would have to use a higher quality DVD. So as a possible caution if you're using this DMR be sure to use a high quality DVD.
