Dependable November 21, 2009 Lori Riccardi I have 4 DVD recorders hooked up in my home. I record alot of t.v. shows. Since DVD recorders have been on the market, I've tried quite a few them. Most of them were not dependable. They don't always record the things you ask them to for various little reasons and it is very frustrating. I've had Magnavox, Sharp, Panasonic and Toshiba. Toshiba was the best one out of all of them. I own 2 of them, and I bought my mother 2 of them. They are very easy to use and set up, which is why I bought them for my 75 year old mother. It's as simple as using a VCR to record tv shows. The picture and sound are great. The Toshiba has never failed to record - not once. The only reason I can't give it a 5 star rating is due to the terrible design of the remote control. It's too large, not backlit and the buttons are in awkward locations. Other than that, I would recommend this DVD recorder to anyone. I have 2 Panasonic recorders that are OK, however they will not record certain tv shows and movies due to copywrite restrictions. I have not had that problem with the Toshiba. Do not hesitate to buy this DVD recorder - you won't be sorry. It's worth the money.
Great product November 16, 2009 E. Avoundjian (Los Angeles, CA, USA) I purchased the product after a long process of checking of other DVD recorders - both online and in the stores. The stores (Best buy, Fry's) do not have too many choice. Buying it from Amazon was a great experience. The product is an excellent value. Works well and it is easy to use. I have converted some old home video tapes to DVD and ver happy with the the steps and the results. Also copy camcorder small tapes to DVD. Again, very easy and intuitive. Have not use the tuner yet.. Oevrall it's a great product!
Excellent value; not difficult to set up and use. November 15, 2009 SnapDoc (DeKalb, IL) After reading many reviews about DVD Payer/Recorders with Tuner, I decided to purchase the Toshiba DR570 with a bit of trepidation, expecting difficulty using the timer recording features. However---and inspite of the complexity of the manual---it is easier to program than our most recent VCR. The menus are fairly intuitive; the clock, which has been set manually, is very dependable. The main challenge---and experience and experimentation will resolve this---is the choice of CDR and RW formats. I chose the CD-RW and have found it quite manageable, although I have not tried to finalize and play the recordings on other DVD players, since the purpose of our buying this was to time shift and play back with the same device. Formatting may be a bit slow for contemporary life, but doesn't really take much time. Loading has been faster than suggested by other reviewers and the quality of the recording is very good!
br /The manual is clumsy and should be accompanied by a condensed version.
br /The creators of the remote need a bit of supervision: small, light-gray letters on a dark gray instrument must have been the work of some apprentices! Others have commented on this.
br /Since I believe than few pieces of equipment merit 5 stars, I would give this one 4.5!
still happy with toshiba November 15, 2009 DalGal (dallas, tx) I own the previous model dr-560 (about one yr)and am extremely satisfied with it. Purchased this model for a second TV in the house and use it mainly for recording over the air tv programs I'd otherwise miss. It was easy to set up and the programming is basically the same as the older mode (like the old vcrs..you plug in the start/finish/channel)and then turn it off. The sound volume needs to be higher when watching both pre-recorded and dvd recorded discs but that seems to be no different than when viewing a purchased dvd on an old toshiba dvd player. Quality is solid. The only thing I find a bit annoying on the newer model is the highlighted notice that flashes on the screen and stays on for about 10 min. prior to a program due to record...it's a reminder to turn the machine off, but if one chooses to not record, it's annoying not to be able to remove it from the screen. Otherwise, for the price, this is a great recorder.
Good DVD Recorder Player/Dreadful Remote November 13, 2009 R. Crane (Washington, DC United States) Until now I have used a VCR/VHS since they were first made to record daily afternoon and evening programs. In case you have not noticed, these machines are now almost impossible to find new and reasonably priced. They are also badly made and have numerous taping problems.
br /
br /So, kicking and screaming I explored alternative worlds of recording.
br /I ruled out TIVO--I can easily program any machine and do not need to pay a monthly subscription fee so that the machine automatically programs it, in addition of course, to purchasing such a machine. Though some will find it an easy alternative, to me this was a waste of money. Ultimately I decided on a DVD recorder and player with a tuner: the tuner makes programming directly from the TV easier. I chose this machine because it had all the features I needed and it arrived today.

br /The quality of the recordings are excellent but the remote, oh my goodness, who in the world designed such a dreadful remote? Another review warned that this was a problem, but somehow I could not imagine to what extent. It is not difficult to read, it is virtually impossible. The letters demarking each function are so pale that they fade entirely away against the black background of the remote. I used a magnifying glass under a very intense light to try and make out key buttons. Unless I memorize their location, this is going to be a disaster. What kind of design engineer would do such a stupid thing and not think about how the remote device will be used?

br /
br /It is astonishing that Toshiba which produces so many fine electronic products would approve this remote. I am afraid it will destroy my enjoyment of what appears to be a perfectly fine DVD recorder/player because I will always be struggling to figure out what key does what.
