The raunchy comedy IShin-Chan/I (originally ICrayon Shin-chan/I, 1992) is a translator's nightmare: the original dialogue relies heavily on puns, word plays, and topical references, which are virtually impossible to render in English. The American story crew tries to hit the main story points and create comparable humor. The result suggests a mean-spirited blend of ISouth Park/I and IThe Family Guy/I. The Noharas, Mom, Dad, baby Hima, and five-year-old Shinnosuke, put the "dis" in dysfunctional family. The parents bicker endlessly, Hima cries, and Shin never misses an opportunity to drop his pants and comment on his (or anyone else's) sexual anatomy and digestive problems. The jokes all seem to be pitched at a junior high locker room level, with endless references to pee, Number 2, boogers, "Mr. Elephant," etc. What's missing is any sense that the members of the Nohara family care about each other. Matt Groening said, "IThe Simpsons/I is about a family whose members love each other but drive each other crazy, which everyone can identify with." IShin Chan/I lacks that sense of underlying affection. In Episode #15, which revolves around Mom's arachnophobia, she comments, "These spiders aren't animated and neither are we"--which sums up the program's visuals. The drawings look like elementary-school scribbles and the animation is so limited, hardly anything moves. But IShin Chan/I scored a bit hit in Japan, and for viewers who like their comedy low, gross, and cynical, it more than fills the bill. A Japanese kids cartoon dubbed in English for an adult crowd, "Shin Chan" from FUNimation features hilarious writing and wonderful voice acting. Special mention goes to Laura Bailey as Shin and Carrie Savage as Penny. br / br /The episodes are cut up from the original into three, usually unconnected, pieces per episode. The plots of each piece appear to be loosely connected to the original, though surely some must vary wildly from the original. br / br /For the price, the DVD is seriously lacking in extras, especially commentary tracks. In this instance this is particularly unfortunate as the cast and crew clearly have the rapport and wit to make the commentaries as good as the episodes they comment on. "Futurama" must be the Gold Standard for commentary tracks, and all DVD producers would profit from following Futurama's example. br / br /Extras notwithstanding, Shin Chan is an outstanding program and worth enjoying.

After purchasing the first part and loving it. I found out that part 2 was going to be released soon. When it came out I bought it. It is funny, and obscene like the first, but I don't think it is as good as the first. I still recommend for a good laugh. The Super Pooper episode is so funny. Season 2 is to come out soon I think and I will probably buy that one too, because this little guy is so funny. I love it.
