5 out of 5 stars how to use the Philips USB port with an external hard drive   November 19, 2009
Alexandra (Reno, NV)
A little known fact is that for this Philips DVD/USB player you can format up to 6 partitions with Fat32 on a larger external hard drive, which allows for up to 192 GB of Philips USB accessible space. br / br /Partition any external hard drive by using Disk Management (it's found in Windows XP under Control Panel -- Administrative Tools -- Computer Management -- Disk Management.) (Be *extra careful* that you don't accidentally partition format the wrong drive --- ie an external hard drive is generally NOT your C: drive.) br / br /As for the extra space on the external drive beyond the 192 GB, a single NTFS partition can be formatted to utilize the rest of the drive's space for storing extra files you don't need to access directly through this dvd player's USB port. br / br /Once the external hard drive is formatted / partitioned into the six Fat32 "drives" you can rotate through the "drives" by pressing the USB button on the remote control. br / br /I was able to rip all of my CDs to MP3 format and store all of my music on my external hard drive to play through my home theater system. Very cool.

5 out of 5 stars Philips 5990 DVD Player   October 23, 2009

I shopped around and looked at a lot of brands with a wide range of costs and cannot believe this was so affordable. I have a lot of old TV shows on my PC in various formats such as DIVX, XVID, and AVI and that was one of my main attributes I was looking for. This one not only plays them but still does my music files too. The icing on the cake was the USB port. I did a lot of checking to verify this would work before I bought this one because some other forums had conflicting comments, likely due to ignorance, but I was able to connect a spare hard drive (HD) to the USB port and I now have access to all my movies and music at the touch of a button. The HD must be formatted for FAT 16 or FAT 32, no NTFS. I now have a media center in my stereo rack. You can't beat it. The only thing I yearn for is a USB port that can power the HD, and a HD that shuts off when you turn off the DVD player. Some players can do that but they cost more. In the meantime I will just use the power switch on the HD and stop being so lazy. br / br /When shopping for this model make sure you have the correct part number. Some sites do not differentiate and label them as just 5990. If you do not know about this you of course will not know you are missing something. The last two characters mean a lot and at this time "F7" has all the features of the latest firmware without the hassle of updating from "37", or something else, although it is not really hard for tech savvy individuals. I have two Philips DVD players and two Philips TV's and I have no issues. Philips has been around for longer than most of you reading this and I found the best deal here. Enough said! br /

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic product - plays all formats and allows you to play directly from a hard drive!   October 1, 2009
Momof2 (USA)
Love this DVD player. It is sleek and light, easy to set up, reasonably intuitive remote, and doesn't take up much space. This was an upgrade to our earlier Philips DVD player (not sure of the model), the major improvement in this is that it plays more formats than the earlier one we had (MPEG4 for example). Another huge benefit of this model is that it allows you to play videos directly from a hard drive, saves us the trouble of burning DVD's or copying to a USB memory stick. Absolutely recommend this product.
