Product Description When it comes to playing true high-def video on your new 1080p HDTV widescreen, Blu-ray discs lead. The only way to play them is on a Blu-Ray player. It's also backward compatible to play DVD and CD pre-recorded discs but if high-def is the thing you're aiming at this is the player you need. Amazing 24p True Cinema output and cinema-tuned picture presets allow you to see movies exactly as the director intended. Featuring LPCM, Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD audio decoding for ultra-realistic sound, this player is also a treat for the ears. And with BRAVIA Theatre Sync, you can control your compatible BRAVIA HDTV and Sony AV system with the press of a button. It supports support AVCHD discs encoded with x.v.Color (xvYCC) technology, an international standard for wide color space. The standard expands the current data range of video by about 1.8 times, allowing the players to output more natural and vivid colors similar to what the human eye can actually see. The players also feature compatibility with an array of video formats, including BDR - - DVD+R/+RW - DVD-R/-RW (Video Mode) - CD - CD-R/RW (CD-DA format) - MP3 and JPEG on DVD media. Likely the format of the digital TV future, you can own and use it today with your new HDTV. Good but not great March 24, 2008 Samuel Robinson (Lawrenceville, GA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this player along with a KDL-46XBR Sony tv. The combination is quite wonderful. My initial review was shortly after purchase, and now I've had the unit about four months. I'm still very pleased with the unit's performance. I have upgraded firmware once in that time period and found the instructions from Sony were reasonably complete and the process was pretty painless. It took about half an hour so it's best to do it when you don't want to be watching anything. The instructions are required, so do not attempt to just run the disk. Picture quality is exceptional. I'm very happy with the upscaling performance of this unit. I have a 6.1 setup as opposed to 7.1 (the center rear speakers are bridged onto one speaker) so I get the general 7.1 experience in my listening area. The imaging and placement are excellent in my viewing area and probably worth the price differential from a BDP-S300. If you're looking for a good midline player I have no problem recommending this unit. Areas where the overall experience is somewhat lacking are the long boot time for the system to come up. I now have the habit of hitting the open button, going off and doing something and then coming back to drop the disk in. This is most annoying thing about the unit. The documentation is not as good as I'd like either. This is a general problem with consumer electronics, and this documentation compares as about average for mid-line audio/video equipment. After living with the unit for four months I think that most users will be pleased with the unit. I do think that the long boot time and difficulties during set up caused by less than complete documentation are detractors. A big plus is the ability to upgrade firmware, as this has been useful already. Overall, I might reconsider and pick up a PS3 instead if I were more of a gamer, but the better audio of the BDP-500 is noticable when comparing systems. If audio and video quality are primary concerns, then this may be the right player for you.
Excellent Performance but Slow Start-up March 4, 2008 K. Case (SoCal) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this disk player because I wanted a mid priced Sony BluRay player to match my Sony HD LCD and A/V receiver to insure compatibility. It worked great right out of the box. I did review the Sony support site prior to the purchase and did the firmware upgrade prior to using it for the first time. I have had ZERO problems with reading BluRay, DVD and CD's. The wife makes home DVD videos of vacation pictures using Roxio Easy DVD creator and the Sony has played each without any problems. I am very satisfied with the player's performance. The only down side is that it takes a few minutes to boot-up after turn on and takes a minute to read a disk after insertion. So it's kinda slow on those two issues.
Sony BDP-S500 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player February 24, 2008 Melvin Betancourt (Shelby Township, MI) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sony BDP-S500 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player is the best investment that I have made to support my CD/DVD collection. Using Blu-Ray DVD'S the picture feels 3D, picture is WOW. Using regular DVD'S the picture conversion is incredible.
BEST PLAYER AMONG THEM FOR IN THE MIDDLE February 21, 2008 Shawn Sombret (Spokane, WA USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the best player I have owned so far. I have owned the LG blu-ray/hd-dvd combo, PS3, Bdp-s1, Bdps300 and the HDA1. It loads as fast as any of them, about 45 seconds, then 15 - 30 seconds to play depending on how new the movie is. Firmware updates help the java loading on newer movies. I gave it four stars for not have DTS HD Master bitstream, but they could easily update its firmware to send it down the pipe. For upscaling it is amazing. The detail on peoples hair etc. is super fine. Unlike what people say, regular DVD players that upscale, can't TRUELY upscale, they just line double. The Blu-Ray players have the processing power to TRUELY process the pixels into a higher resolution. I have owned the DENON 3910 DVD player, and even this superb player could'nt upscale like this one. I bought this player for the HDMI 1.3 for Bitstream HD Audio and support for High bandwidth colors. The BDP-S300 isn't HDMI 1.3, so it lacks future abilities for higher color gamut. All in all this is the best player in its price range. I have hooked it up to both a LG 47lc7df LCD and a Mitsubishi WD65833 Diamond series DLP. Both look crystal clean. Movies will very on quality depending on the transfer and age of material.
