Product Description
This is TV for those who want to carry it with them from the kitchen to the bedroom or from the attic to the basement without missing a vital clue to the mystery or that 50-yard pass play. This is the Internet for those who want state-of-art, encrypted, secured device authenticated access to their own ISP account from anywhere there's a WiFi hotspot or Ethernet port without the hassle of complicated hook-ups, synching, and downloading the way you do now if you want mobile entertainment using computer-based systems. The base station allows for connection of two video sources in addition to the regular antenna/cable TV input; and it stays with the components, making for short, easy hook-ups. But the LCD touch-panel monitor is free to roam. Don't be tied to just one room in your house. Don't leave your video entertainment and the Internet service at home when you travel. With Sony's fusion of traditional TV and broadband IT technology, you can access your favorite programming, Web sites, and e-mail on the LFX5's wireless 7" touch-panel screen from virtually anywhere you happen to be. That even includes outdoors - as WiFi hotspots gradually become available. At about one pound, the LFX5's compactly designed 7" TFT LCD WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio LCD monitor produces outstanding video quality. Amazon.com Product Description

Hit the road with not merely a stylish portable television, but a flat-panel LCD TV capable of letting you surf the Web and check e-mail--wirelessly--from just about anywhere on the planet. Sony's LF-X5 LocationFree TV weighs little more than a pound and comes with stereo headphones and a carry case.

The wireless LF-X1 system consists of a 7-inch LCD TV with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, 800 x 480 native pixel resolution, and an accompanying base station.

Enjoy your favorite programming in your favorite spot with the 7-inch LocationFree TV.
The base station houses most connection terminals, an NTSC broadcast tuner, and a wireless transmitter. The monitor runs on either of two supplied rechargeable lithium batteries (one standard, one long-life), while the battery charger works on universal power (AC 100 to 240V) for use in most countries.

Using Sony's first dual-band wireless system (2.4 and 5 GHz), the base station transmits video content to the touch-panel screen--there's no mouse required. The set delivers stable video and audio signals without interference from other 2.4 GHz devices, such as microwave ovens and cordless phones. Internet and TV content arrives from the base station by way of secured device authentication and encryption technology, making the system perfect for Internet surfing in Wi-Fi hotspots and via Ethernet ports found in hotels, airports, and other locations.

The innovative system employs the IEEE 802.11a/g protocol for a wide selection of transmission channels, and it switches the channel automatically to minimize monitor interference across a range of up to 100 feet from the base station. The 802.11a/g standards support a higher bit rate than the conventional 802.11b standard, helping the set maintain stable, high-quality video images. The LocationFree TV also uses advanced QoS (Quality of Service) technology, which delivers extra bandwidth security for reliable audio-video transmissions, even in high-traffic wireless environments.

The LocationFree TV autoselects the strongest wireless signal so you get the best transmission wherever you are.
When the base station and the wireless monitor are each connected to the Internet through your existing ISP, you can easily and quickly access the Web, exchange e-mail, and shop online using the onscreen keyboard. It can also morph into a digital photo album, displaying custom slide shows from its built-in memory or from a CompactFlash card, which plugs into a dedicated flash-memory port. You may also play MPEG-1 video files from a CF card.

Filling the role of an intuitive graphical use interface (GUI), the onscreen universal remote and onscreen keyboard heighten the LocationFree TV's uniqueness and versatility. Sony's GUI simplifies navigation of all aspects of the set. You can even use the screen itself as a remote to switch from channel to channel or from function to function.

The base station houses an Ethernet port for broadband compatibility and 2 video inputs for audio/video components and other peripherals (S-video, composite-video). There's also IR blaster for added control and convenience.

What's in the Box
The LocationFree TV, a base station, stereo headphones, a quick-start guide, an IR blaster, two rechargeable batteries (1 standard and 1 long-life), a carrying case, an instruction manual, and a stylus.

4 out of 5 stars My experience with Sony's LocationFree TV   March 25, 2006

This is an elegant handheld wireless TV with good picture and sound (considering its size, at least.) It is sold as having a range of 55 feet, but as I roam from room to room in my home, I get breakup around 25 feet from the transmitter. I'm disapointed with this range, but otherwise am very pleased.

4 out of 5 stars After Getting Past Initial Setup, it's a 5 STAR product...   December 23, 2005

I agree with the previous review that it can be a bit of a pain getting it set up.. but once we bought a router, and the misc. paraphenalia associated with that, we were ON our way!

I have to disagree with the previous reviews that state you cannot access yahoo or hotmail.. NOT SO. I have accessed my yahoo mail, hotmail account, etc.... and have browsed the web using google, yahoo, msn, etc. The ONLY thing I cannot do as of yet (but I think there may be a way) is access my instant messaging accounts. If I could do that, it would earn this product 5 star ratings hands down.

The ONLY negative thing about this product as far as design is the undeniable fact that one day I will lose my grip and drop it.

There really needs to be a slip on cover that leaves the screen bare, but that would protect the corners/edges if it were to be dropped or fall from the counter, etc. It's lightweight, which is great, but I can't shake that overwhelming feeling that dropping it is inevitable. It's somewhat difficult to get a good grip on due to the fact that the screen covers almost the entire surface.

Bottom line - we are still reading and learning about all of this product's uses, but within a matter of hours we were able to watch t.v., surf the web, and fiddle on email fairly easily.

Would not recommend this product for children under 14. It's definitely not a toy.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Technology   May 3, 2005

This product has great technology:

The good parts:
1) You can access three different inputs for Viewing (Cable, Dish or DVD) with prety good quality. As good as your TV
2) You can control the units remotely. Change Channels, turn on/off View the guides, etc from anywhere in the internet. So you can travel with the unit and watch your own TV at airports or other locations. Very cool
3) Access the web via a 2.4 or 5.0 GH 802.11 compatible
4) View your photos from any digital camera storage card (some with adapters.
5) View your e-mails
6) Touch screen technology
7) Capability to capture anything on the screen (very cool)
8) You can also buy the PC software to connect your PC to the Base unit

The Bad
1) A little difficult to get started, but once it is all setup it works very well
2) The range is not very good, it kind of defeats the wireless benefit.
3) The Web browser does not work with every website, like Yahoo and hotmail mail.
4) The IR cable is too short and it seams that you need 2 if you are controlling 2 devices
5) the LF-X5 doe not have a USB port to connect a keyboard the LF-X1 does. It would be nice to have it

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous functionality with some rough edges...   November 13, 2004

I absolutely LOVE this thing. I've long wanted a wireless TV I could carry throughout the house. I'd toyed around with analog 2.4ghz wireless monitors but the range was very short and other devices (WiFi and cordless phones) interfered. The microwave absolutely wiped the thing out as well. Such interference is NOT an issue with the LF-X5. Run the microwave, browse the net, talk on the phone and you can still have the TV going without skipping a beat.

Note that there's NO difference in functionality between this unit and the larger LF-X1. The X1 has a few more connections and a larger screen but they operate identically.

The picture quality is very good and for what it's doing it's absolutely exceptional and setup for use around the house is very easy. Plug the base into the wall, connect up the cable, turn the display on and you're done! No configuration or networking expertise needed at all. Using it with satellite or a cable box will require some configuration which can be a bit daunting. Reading the manual thoroughly will get you through though.

My only problem with it when it's used around the house is that the range is noticably shorter than when using a standard WiFi access point. I'm not sure if it's using lower power or if it's a matter of a lack of antennae but the range is somewhat lacking.

Outside the house it's another matter. This unit will likely NOT work with a standard broadband connection. It needs at least a solid 384k upstream to achieve decent quality and even 1.5Mbps isn't enough to use the highest bitrates. If your ISP offers high upstream rates this unit will work WONDERFULLY for you.

It's truly novel to be relaxing in a hotel in Sao Paulo after a long day catching up on Nip/Tuck.... being able to do so makes this oddity worth it's weight in gold.
