Quality at a Reasonable Price August 1, 2008 semileptonic (Maryland USA) I recently purchased the Marantz PM7001 through Amazon. I was able to get a discount price (10%) through One Call in the Amazon store. The amp is not as tall as their previous PM7000, which I also own. The amp puts out that clear warm Marantz sound one might expect, and does it very well. The input select rotary switch is nice, and the volume control is motorized and accessible via the remote control. The remote has a volume and mute control, as well as input selection buttons. This unit is a very attractive piece of equipment, losing some bulk from previous units like the PM7000. It will fit in very well under the TV for 2 channel audio. Power Usage: I hooked up a Kill-A-Watt meter to the unit and was pleasantly surprise at the low power use. At low levels suitable for general background and TV watching, it only uses about 25 watts. When you crank up the volume, you can push 80 watts and get a reasonably loud sound field, and it only uses the power when it needs it (for example when the music has lots of bass). Overall, it is a well-designed attractive amplifier, and I may get another for a 2nd system. It is superior in appearance and build quality to comparably priced NAD units in my opinion. Unless you are looking for a high power, high end unit this will serve you well I believe. Highly recommended.
Superb amplifier January 16, 2008 Davor Stipetic (Croatia) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I own the European version of this amplifier, but other than the different input voltage (220V/50Hz), it is basically the same product. I use it in combination with the Marantz CD6002 CD player and Marantz ST6001 tuner, connected via Straightwire Chorus II interconnects. I also have a pair of B&W 684 speakers connected via Straightwire Octave II speaker cables. I have even connected my Pioneer DVD player to the amplifier. All I can say is that this is a great amplifier. The sound is neutral, harmonic-rich, transparent, very detailed and forceful. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an audiophile integrated amplifier for a reasonable price.
