5 out of 5 stars wow what a deal   April 2, 2008
Daniel R. Donofrio
I was in the market for a decent home theater for my room. Im a college student living at home and working about 20 hours a week on commision so I had some money to burn. I have the whole home theater set up. HDTV, 360, but i needed some sound upgrades. br / br /So me and my buddy go down to best buy on dec. 26th not really thinking i was going to buy a home theater system. But looking around at all the systems from 299 and up I notice this Yamaha HTIB Yamaha YHT-380BL Home Theater in a Box (Black) (Home Theater in a Box) and notice that its 299 for this reciever, five speakers and a subwoofer. This was the only HTIB that had a receiver that was under 400. I noticed that it was reguarly 400 dollars but because it was HDMI-less it was marked down significantly. br / br /That is the only downside to this package but you get better video connecting your bluray, 360 and whatever else you have directly to your TV and then directly connecting an optical cable to the receiver from thecomponents. br / br /This reciever is very good especially at its price. I suggest taking a trip to best buy to see if they still have the whole home theater package avaliable

4 out of 5 stars Setup not a breeze... but a good unit   March 20, 2008
T. Hurley (Pacific Northwest)
We purchased this receiver and it's great when you finally get it set up. I see other reviews saying it had easy setup, but wow now I feel like an idiot because we didn't find it to be so. Of course, we are replacing an old amazingly fine Phase Linear amp that finally gave up the ghost after many years of excellent service. Ah, those were the days of simplicity... it was all about sound quality. But I digress. It took two of us a bit of study to get everything functioning correctly. After successfully connecting components, we proceeded to set stations on the tuner - that could be a lot simpler as well. I consider myself an intelligent person with some computer savvy and I found myself frustrated/impatient with setup. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, we are happy with the sound quality. So my opinion is that this unit is great, but be patient and give yourself time for setup. Or call in a friend who has better geek skills.

4 out of 5 stars Nice powerful Amp   March 1, 2008
Tango Static (San Jose, CA)
This is being used in a dance studio driving two big speakers and a subwoofer. The sound is clean, and undistorted at loud levels. It also provides front panel inputs for an iPod, which most of the dance instructors use. You can select various DSP algorithms, for example, concert hall, jazz club, or theater. I run it "straight" since the sound is quite good directly from CD's or the iPod. The price is excellent!!!

4 out of 5 stars Pleased, easy setup, but........   January 26, 2008
John T. Staver (Northeastern MD)
Received this unit from Amazon in great condition. Easy hookups, and simple initial setup. Surround sounds nice. br / br /But....... trying to get the tuner to search for stations, or manually select a station is very difficult. The manual walks through a process to maually change the stations, I didn't work for me after trying for 30 minutes. I suspect I'm missing something, but all the same, tuning in a station should be extremely simple. Another reviewer had the same difficulty with the tuner. br / br /Other than the tuner problems, I'm extremely pleased with this receiver. I would buy this receiver again !! Great value for a basic surround system.
