Well worth it November 3, 2009 TK (New York, USA) Recently moved into new home wanted to upgrade my surround sound system. Previously I had the harman kardon HKTS 15 (step down from this one). My living room is about 25x15 feet. Used these speakers with harman kardon AVR 254 (delivers true 50 watts per channel). There definitely is a difference in the sound quality. These speakers are amazing! I use them for movies and music. Watching blue ray movies feels like you are in the movie theater. You dont miss out on any soundtrack from the movie. The included microphone for EZ setup is also very convenient which fine tunes your system automatically to give you the best sound quality. The 200 Watt subwoofer is impressive and looks very sleek. The bass produced is amazing and easily fills up the room even when turned up 60% on the bass control knob in the back of the unit.

br /Combined with the harman kardon receiver you get crisp and accurate reproduction of soundtracks without distortion even at high volumes. If you plan on using your system often (movie nights, music, or even TV/sports), you will definitely get your money's worth and will be glad every time you turn on the system. Friends are impressed every time they come over, even those not too much into movies, get absorbed in the soundtracks just from the experience it creates. So I would recommend this for your regular movie, music, TV use combined with AVR 254 or better receiver. If you are getting the two combined, make sure you have your flat screen...then turn the lights down and be prepared to be blown away.
Great sound October 16, 2009 Rob Belics (St. Charles, MO USA) I am not an audio expert by far so you can consider these comments as by an average listener even though I used to work in professional audio studios years ago. These speakers are the best I've ever owned for home. I probably wouldn't really know the difference between these and more expensive speakers that audiophiles may prefer but they came highly recommended by several online sources. Originally, I was going to get the HKTS-15 but decided I might prefer having the extra power these have. I believe they are essentially the same.

br /As far as construction quality, after a couple weeks, my son managed to trip over one speaker wire and knock the speaker off a 3ft high table onto a carpeted floor. No dents or dings and the speaker doesn't seem to be worse off for it.
br /
br /If you are frustrated with the bewildering array of choices for your home system, and just want something that sounds like you bought a quality component, you won't be wrong choosing these or the -15 I mentioned above.
It's okay. Cheap plastic construction. September 24, 2009 Sam (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I think that my 10 year old Polk 5.1 speakers were starting to die. More often than not, we kept asking each other "What did they say?" whether it was on TV or DVD. I looked around and from the positive reviews I bought the HK.
br /
br /I was somewhat shocked by the flimsy plastic build. The Polks are made out of rugged metal.
br /The HK wall mounts are junk. The Polk mounts have a metal ball and joint construction.
br /The plastic spring wire grips are junk. Plastic deteriorates over time and will eventually break. This happened to me on some other older speakers just a few days ago. The Polk have metal screw-downs for the wires.
br /
br /Mind you, the Polks were in the same price category so I'm not comparing high-end to entry-level speakers.
br /
br /For build construction, I give the HK 2 stars. These are disposable speakers.
br /
br /When it came to sound, the front center speaker (wow, that is tiny compared to the Polk; but is that good or bad? I don't know) seemed a bit bright - tinny? I used the Sony STR-DA5300ES receiver with the microphone to automatically balance the sound.
br /
br /For a best-case test, we played a Blu-Ray 'Immortal Beloved' using a Sony STR-DA5300ES receiver (a fantastic piece of equipment -- it revitalized the Polk speakers that sounded awful with our older Onkyo receiever). Our initial impression is that the sound seemed less muddy. We could more clearly hear the dialog even with the accents.
br /
br /We're not audiophiles or snobs so we weren't expecting concert hall quality but at this point, we're not delighted. We'll run it for a couple of weeks and see if we stop saying "Huh" as much or using sub-titles when watching movies. If not, we'll pay an obscene amount of money to ship it back.
br /
br /I *will* keep you posted.

br /--- Oct 28, 09 update ---
br /
br /I returned the HK set. Fortunately, Amazon sent me a pre-paid UPS return label so that I wound up paying business class shipping costs (they deducted the amount from my credit).
br /
br /I wound up buying higher-end Aperion speakers (available through Amazon or directly from Aperion). Yes, the price of the set is far more but the quality is mind-blowing. Is this a fair comparison? Absolutely not. It's like comparing a Ford Escort to a low to mid-level Mercedes-Benz but I mention it only because when you get below a certain price point, one should not except a heck of a lot of quality. Most importantly for me, I didn't want to upgrade speakers later on. I wanted speakers to last me 10+ years.
br /
br /With Aperion, if you don't like the speakers you can return them within 30 days (zero shipping costs both ways). Within a year, you can upgrade for free (except for the shipping costs). When you call Aperion, you don't get a machine. You get a real-live tech on the first call and they will go to the ends of the world providing technical support. They have the manuals of every receiver so that if you have a question, they can look up your receiver model and provide accurate advice.
br /
br /Aperion is not in the stratospheric high-end audio region where the sight of the price of each speaker can cause a fatal heart attack. We have an audio store like that here and I was shaking after seeing the prices. I was relieved when I left the store.
br /
br /If you spent a lot of money on a good receiver and want to get the most sound quality out of it without going bankrupt, check out the Aperion speakers. Would you put cheap retreaded tires on your new Porsche?

Great Sound!!! September 24, 2009 Zachary O. Young 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the best surround system that I have ever had. I love the bass and the clarity in the highs. The only negative I could think of would be that I wish the mids were just a little stonger. But overall, I don't think you can find a better home theatre system for less money.
