3 out of 5 stars Disappointing   September 7, 2009

I bought this because of the high ratings others gave it and the Yamaha name. It's far too boomy when in a corner which is ok. That's typical for a subwoofer. I put it about 3 feet from the corner and the response evened out. br / br /This speaker seems to suffer from doubling. I can locate it from the sound when watching Tomb Raider. Other movies aren't as problematic. When I listen to music with it, the bass sounds muddy. If I turn the subwoofer down so it's not muddy, I can't hear it at all. br / br /It's OK for cannon shots and car crashes, but don't expect any kind of sonic fidelity. br / br /I'm using it with a Pioneer Elite KURO PRO-111FD. br / br /I've replaced it with the Energy ESW-8 that's on Amazon for $148.58. Energy ESW-8HG 8" 200 watt Take Classic subwoofer The bass is tighter and much deeper. The Energy is good for music and much better for movies. You pay $50 more and get a subwoofer that's twice as good. br / br /With the Energy subwoofer, even classical music sounds great with the speakers that came with the TV. br / br /It's too late for me to return this, plus Adorama's return policy wasn't that liberal. I'll be selling the Yamaha.

4 out of 5 stars Nice sub For the price.   August 24, 2009

The placement is very important, I was generally pleased with the quality of sound; AFTER a good break in period. When first switched on and volume adjusted it sounded muddy and almost horrible. I know that speakers need to be "broken in" to get them to start to work as they are suppose to, so even though I was very unhappy at first, about two hours of watching Blade II(which this sub works very nice for a small home theatre) I again put in some music, I am mating the sub with some small NHT bookshelf speakers, the sub sounded much more natural and the muddy, sloppy bass I got at first was gone, replaced with much tighter more accurate bass reproduction.

3 out of 5 stars An OK inexpensive subwoofer   August 13, 2009

I purchased this subwoofer to augment some rather small bookshelf speakers. I reviewed the owner's manual online before buying and decided that this sub would match up well because the built in low-pass crossover would match the roll off of the small speakers. The sub arrived and was well packed in the manufacturer's carton. The sub is not heavy so you can expect the same experience (no shipping damage). br / br /I connected the sub via the speaker level inputs and played around with placement and level with a variety of music types. For the price, you get a lot of bang for the buck. Overall the sub looks nice and is not large so it can be hidden easily. Because it only needs 45 watts of input power, I could connect it directly to a switched power outlet on the back of my equipment so I didn't mind that there is no "auto-on" feature. I was not really too impressed with the overall quality of the sound, but I have some pretty good hi-fi equipment at home to compare it with. br / br /If you want really good sounding bass with more extension and control, buy something else but be prepared to spend at least 5 times the $$. For casual listening and for non-critical ears, this is a great buy and you can even afford to buy a stereo pair.

4 out of 5 stars works well, lacks auto on and real bass power   July 15, 2009
Larry J. Schwake (NC mountains)
Arrived as a new unit while purchased as a refurb. Generally I am pleased with the unit. It functions well in my 5.1 system and has sufficient punch and clarity on the low range to supplement the Bose units I am using for the balance. It will not really rock the room due to distortion at high levels, but that is not my use expectation.
