This is a case of both sides of a debate being right, the debate and criticism being pointless if one just pays attention to the context.
It is absolutely true that dealing with the environment and using products that require less EQ in preferable for many reasons in absolute terms. The concept of using REW in the manner most of us do is, however, a sound alternative within the environment provided in home acoustics.
It is also important to realize that the parameters of large venues and live performace optimization are very different. Low frequencies in even a medium sized venue presents different chanllenges than in a typical home theater. "It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it."
