Before and After - no BFD

I have begun playing with REW and have tried to improve my situation without a BFD. For a start, I had this:

I adjusted the phase, crossover and repositioned it (actually just turned it 90 degrees in it's existing location) and got this:

I was surprised that turning it made any difference - it's a downfiring sub. For kicks, I took measurements right at the sub, on three sides, and got different results in the front. I realized that the ports were in front and affected the sound so maybe a twist would change things. It did! That did more than moving it to 2 different locations.

I also tried a piece of plywood under it thinking a different surface (than the carpet) would make a difference. No change at all!

So, other than recommending a better sub that actually plays something below 35hz are there any other ideas for how I might affect the curve? I'm guessing the easiest is to break down and get a BFD but enjoy the challenge of finding other ways before turning to an EQ.

For those who are curious, this is an MTX 12" woofer. Only $150 and I suppose that's why it doesn't have any bottom end. I got it before I really started understanding some of this stuff ... the specs say it only goes to 35Hz and I guess I've verified that!
