No, the problem most experience with a BFD when inserted in the mains signal is noise. It's the annoying hiss........... With the volume off, put your ear near your mains and listen (with and without the BFD).

I put my ear to my mains and I could hear the hiss - a tad louder than my receiver powering the other set of mains. I guess if one has a $2500 receiver or $2000 amp, the hiss may be annoying.
For whatever reason, I get valleys in the 170-550Hz range with my two sets of mains. Being able to EQ the mains in this frequency range helps to impart warmth and balance to the music without the boomy sound that one would get with a simple bass boost.
EDIT: The hiss is inaudible if volume is off. The hiss was heard with the volume control at listening level of 75-80dB (est), and CD player stopped. But that's with one ear to the tweeter.
