People like to accept explanations that fit their experience and give them some satisfaction or someone to blame for things that are out of their control. Even when they do not make sense or are contrary to the facts which may require some effort to ascertain. No different than some of the extremely weird religious and cult beliefs that we see. "It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it."
