I will be covering the tube with black marine carpet, which can be obtained from Home Depot. Also, I will most likely sand the caps (2 layers 3/4" mdf) and spray paint them black, possibly with a clearcoat.
The hookup would probably be ok with rca->1/4" from the sub-preout to the amp. I had some issues with my onkyo 901 that required an art cleanbox to convert the unbalanced 1/4" to balanced xlr, but the cleabox will cut off the lower subwoofer frequencies without modification. I would try the 1/4" and if you have issues with levels, we can address them as they arise.
