| Re: Power Conditioning and SMPSs There are many UPS devices that have little power conditioning and many power conditioners that do not have a UPS. You can't generalize very effectively on these units.
A power conditioner's purpose is to clean up noise on the a.c. line and provide clean power to the connected products. It does not necessarily have any ability to provide backup power during an outage. This requires batteries and the ability to generate a.c. Most have adequate, often better, surge suppression than less expensive surge suppressors and most UPSs, but this varies. Many do not have protection for signal lines such as cable, sat, or networks, and this, IMO, is a serious limitation.
UPSs are battery backup devices to maintain power when there is an outage. They often have poorer surge protection and filtering and often lack signal line protection. Many output very noisy modified square waves and not a pure sine wave.
There are endless variations on each type of device and combinations of functions. They vary greatly in effect and one should not assume what they do but should check carefully before buying. ______________________ Why I support scouting...
