I do not print that many photos but am currently using an Epson DX 4850 printer/scanner. I was previously using a Canon S820 which probably was better quality wise, I switched to the Epson when my scanner went bang, it was just cheaper to buy a combo. Separate ink cartridges is a must, had an old Canon printer at some stage and when one colour ran out you had to change the three colour cartridge or print minus which ever colour had run out. I have found that the better the paper quality the better the print quality, I do not always use the manufacturer's recommended paper as it tends to be more expensive for what I presume is pretty much the same thing.
