My end of the business seems like kindergarten compared to audio
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're comparing video production to audio production (?) ...

As someone who has studied and worked in both mediums I have to disagree.
Just like an audio guy must pick the right microphone and record in a properly treated room to obtain professional results, a camera man must pick the right lens and shoot in a properly lit area to obtain professional results.

I think video and film can be just as vast as audio if not more so, as film includes audio.

The best directors/camera operators I 've worked with know how important great sound is to a film and usually know a fair bit about it as well.

There are of course extreme examples of both.

There are some audio folks who just set up a mic and press record and hope for the best just as there are some camera operators who just point and shoot without any preparation.

On the other side are the audio engineers that spend 4 hours trying mic/preamp combinations, fine tuning their mic placement and the condition of the source, and go to extreme measures to make sure every link in their signal path is pristine up to $7000 audio cables.

Just as there are video professionals that make sure the lens(s) are a perfect match and will do anything to get the perfect angle and depth of field. They make or call for differences in the lighting that folks like myself can't even differentiate between other than to say "it somehow looks better!". Then they as well use the best gear they can from lens, to body, to cable, to monitor.

I see what you're saying, as with a camera, it's just 1 piece that you point and shoot.
But that can be true of audio as well.
