Which JBL? Got T/S parameters? That's a lot of amp in a big box. Just a guess without seeing any models or knowing the Xmax of that JBL, there's a good chance an SS filter really isn't going to help. With a ported box, there's also an excursion peak just a little above the tuning frequency. In your case, that would be in the mid 30s, where a lot of content lives. What content is causing the bottoming?

As far as using an EQ for the SS filter. Unless the device explicitly has an SS filter, you'll need multiple EQ bands below 20hz to accomplish this. Otherwise, Elemental Designs is bringing out a dual band PEQ box that will also have a user adjustable SS filter for $99...not sure of a ship date. Kevin at DIYCable, is working on the Woofer Widget, which will also have some sort of user adjustable SS filter, but price is projected to be around $300.
