A properly calibrated CRT has by far one of the best PQ out there.
This was true until just this year. OLED (organic LED) is now being produced and you will soon get all the fantastic colour and contrast of a CRT display without the burn in issues. I still have my Sony 53"HD RPTV and agree its has the best picture in HD of any display I have seen. I tried my BluRay player on it and it blows even the best Plasma out of the water as I had it calibrated properly and make sure the convergence is perfect every 3 months or so manually.
