Thanks for your reply. Problem has been sorted out but in the end it lay elsewhere: I had been following the instruction to leave the input/output and input/output devices to default but in the end what I needed to do was choose the actual soundcard (Realtek AC97) and the intput as LINE-IN (just in case anyone is interested).
