tundrasq - sorry I missed your question! The size was a combination of fooling with modeling software and necessity of fitting into a very specific space. I only had a certain space between my TV stand and an exterior wall. One of the hardest parts of the build was figuring out how to get everything to fit without hitting inside. Between the speaker basket and the 6" port tube things got tight.
It really sounds great. Very smooth and clean and it really hits deep. Shakes the walls, windows, pictures, various other things.... I was actually surprised that it is quite musical for popular/rock music. Good tight kick drums, etc.
