I'm no expert here whatsoever (lurked for about two weeks or so). I have a top-end SB X-Fi card in a brand new Dell. I didn't want to mess with it, so I went the simple route and bought a SB Live! 24-bit external USB box for my work laptop for 39$ off EBay as so many people seem to have great luck with them here and there's various threads that show setups for it, etc. I had everything up and was fiddling with curves in 10 mins. Just a thought..., worked really well for me.
