i like the suggestion of 8 1TB drives as it leaves room for growth, however i'm inexperienced in building something like this and am worried that it would be more complicated than if i invested into an out of box solution. Your right, i'm going to have to invest some serious time into just copying all this data let alone time to set up a custom storage system.
What concerns me above all is the user interface. I don't want to build this elaborate system and spend more than 10 minutes being able to choose and load a movie. I want it as easy as an on screen menu displaying my titles in categores Drama, Comedy, Horror etc. then clicking on my choice then the movie loads and plays. Basically just like satellite TV or pay per view.
