I think this speaker has too little xmax to be very useful, but I am no expert. I modeled it in a 20" cube both sealed and ported and in a sealed box you get a -3db of about 60 Hz and in a vented box you get about 25 Hz at -3db. You would need a high pass filter for sure on the vented box at about 24 Hz and you hit xmax in the sealed box around 32 Hz. |
Thank you Canadian_Dude,
It's usefulness has to be looked at in the function that it's intended for: the bottom end of a single channel main speaker that is X'ed-over at 80Hz and almost never gets played at reference levels because I live in a condo. I'm not looking for big bass, just nice well integrated bass. From you're post I understand that I need a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 8,000 cubic inches. I'm hoping that I'm allowed to reach that volume using dimensions other than a 20 inch cube.
I will have to do a little more learning to understand most of the other info info in your response. BTW, I went to high school in Calgary and visited Edmonton a time or two.

This sub should be fine in 80 L, 25 Hz Tune, 4" (41 cm long) port and 300/350 W amp, a high pass is req. as tune is quite high |
Hi blaser,
I feel kind of like a kid in a candy store coming back to see two responses with graphs everywhere. Let me admit that I think 80 L is 80 liters and even though I'm not sure how big that really is, it sounds huge. Being a condo dweller, size really matters. Depth is my real enemy. Going with Canadian Dude's 8,000 cubic inch figure, I'm hoping to be able to use an internal set of dimensions of 12"x25"x27" DxHxW. That leaves 100 cubic inches for bracing. I know I want front firing and front or side porting is fine. It's starting to look like I am going to have to learn what all those little letters really mean. With any luck, by the time I figure this out, I will have had some fun and will walk away with a couple of subs to use as extensions of my left and right mains.
Best regards,
Alex
Note: I still have to decide to do this. I'm thinking of it as a good first step in sub building and a realatively inexpensive upgrade in SQ. I know there's lots to learn but I have time. Thoughts and suggestions are always welcome and I'm not thin skinned so you can say it like it is.
