A Hollis Frampton Odyssey (1966-1979) Icon of the American avant-garde Hollis Frampton made rigorous, audacious, brainy, and downright thrilling films, leaving behind a body of work that remains unparalleled. In the 1960s, having started out as a poet and photographer, Frampton became fascinated with the possibilities of 16mm filmmaking. In such radically playful, visually and sonically arresting works as "Surface Tension," "Zorns Lemma," "(nostalgia)," "Critical Mass," and the enormous, unfinished Magellan cycle (cut short by his death at age 48), Frampton repurposes cinema itself, making it into something by turns literary, mathematical, sculptural, and simply beautiful -- and always captivating. This collection of works by the essential artist -- the first home video release of its kind - includes 24 films, dating from 1966 to 1979. New high-definition digital restorations of all 24 films, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks on the Blu-ray edition. Extras: Audio commentary and remarks by filmmaker Hollis Frampton on selected works; excerpted interview with Frampton from 1978; "A Lecture," a performance piece by Frampton, recorded in 1968 with the voice of artist Michael Snow; gallery of works from Frampton's xerographic series "By Any Other Name"; booklet with an introduction by film critic Ed Halter and essays and capsules on the films by Frampton scholars Ken Eisenstein, Bruce Jenkins and Michael Zryd(The Criterion Collection).

Racing to the scene, scientists from the local Denver museum could scarcely believe what they found: a vast trove of fossils from the depths of the Ice Age 100,000 years ago, when North America teemed with incredible beasts: massive mastodons, saber tooth cats and camels, giant bison with six-foot horns, and ground sloths as big as elephants with huge claws. $24.99. Formats: DVD. (PBS Distribution).

One Tree Hill: The Complete Ninth and Final Season (2012) Four-disc set with 13 episodes, $39.98. Formats: DVD. Extras: Five featurettes, commentary, unaired scenes, gag reel. (Warner).

Surviving Hitler: A Love Story (2011) Documentary. A shocking true life love story in the midst of humankind's darkest horror, a harrowing tale of war, resistance, and survival. As a teenager in Nazi Germany, Jutta is shocked to discover she is Jewish. She joins the German resistance and meets Helmuth, an injured soldier. The two become sweethearts and soon co-conspirators in the daring final plot to assassinate Hitler. At the center of the documentary is a love story for the ages, with riveting narration by Jutta herself, original 8mm footage (shot by Helmuth) and, miraculously, a happy ending.
