Back surgery tomorrow

Hello all,
I just thought I'd drop a note in here and let you know that I am undergoing surgery tomorrow morning (Oct 3).
I am having my lower back fused in an attempt to put an end to a long series of problems and operations.
I am just a bit freaked out right now. I've had a number of operations on my back in the last 5 years, but nothing this big. It's one of those 7 hour, front and back deals (anterior/posterior lumbar interbody fusion)
Not really sure what I'm asking, I just kinda felt the need to tell somebody.
Thanks for listening, and I hope to see you guys on the other side.
Jim

Re: Back surgery tomorrow

Jim, our prayers will be with you. I am not very familiar with your surgery but maybe this will put it in a perspective that will ease your mind. My dad had a similar surgery about fifty years ago. He had serious back problems before, and while the recovery was slow, he had great improvement after that. Now that was half a century ago. Think about how far everything has come since then. Chances are likely pretty good that these surgeries are successful and safer these days, with fewer recovery difficulties.

Tell us more. Are you married, have kids?

We'll be thinkning of you and wish you and your family the best.

Re: Back surgery tomorrow

Thanks for the prayers and support.
I made it through the surgery on Tuesday and I am home today and doing reasonably well. The Dr's said that the whole thing went just as they wanted, and they were not only able to retrieve all of the disk fragments that were pushing on my nerve roots, but they also removed a lot of scar tissue from there, freeing up my spinal cord.
I still have a long way to go, but I am confident that I will make a full and speedy recovery.
Thanks again
Jim

Re: Back surgery tomorrow

My dad, hes 55, recently had similar surgery, although only from the back, his disc burst and wedged into his spine, hes doing very well other than lack of feeling in his lower leg.

Im 24, and since i was 19 when i fell down a flight of stairs i have also put up with the same problem. unfortunatly because of the 4 years it took to diagnose, the way my disc has crystalised and scar tissue formed they dont want to operate, ill have to have serious issues (paralysis basicly) before they will do anything, they have tried to pump me full of all kinds of medication, luckily im managing without anything at the moment.

i know what your going through, even if i dont know you, and im not a praying man, but my thoughts are with you as you recover, good luck.

edd
