Dr F, I did not in any way think you did not acknowledge or appreciate the people who work in the medical profession.

I have modified my original post to be more concise and express my concerns more accurately.

I apologize for going off topic, and assure you I am only sympathetic to your situation and hope that all turns out well for you, your wife, and your kids.

Re: My Wifes cancer

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update:

My wife started a new drug with her last round of Chemo. The new drug Avastin is supposed to reduce the oxygen flow to the cancer cells thus prolonging life. The downside is that each fortnightly administration of the drug costs over $2000 Australian. A very costly drug but certainly worth more than anything else.

Thanks for all your support.

DrF

Re: My Wifes cancer

That must be a pretty serious drug at that price, but as you say, most definitely worth it. I hope it does here well.

Re: My Wifes cancer

No it's not. Unfortunately becasue the drug isn't a cure it currently isn't on the PBS. There is however a cap on the cost, once we have paid $18,000 the drug will be provided free for the remainder of her treatement (rest of her life).

You can add my voice to the crowd.

If I got my arithmetic right it's been a day or so of chemo, how goes it?

Re: My Wifes cancer

its the second day (end of) and she is doing very well, this time there has been very little tiredness and high nuetrophyls (baby white blood cells) are the highest they have been since she started her treatment. All very good news so far.

thank you all for your support.

Re: My Wifes cancer

DrF, I too am very glad to hear that Marion is doing well. I want you to know that you, Marion, and your family will be in my thoughts. You have taken the time to consider my own troubles and pass on encouragement and advice while you own situation is much more difficult. I do appreciate the kindness that you have extended to me.

In order to make an effort to control what I have come to realize is an addiction I will no longer be able to post the thread here. I especially wanted you to know that the lack of posted support from me does NOT mean that I am not thinking, and yes praying on your behalf.

Re: My Wifes cancer

updates:

Good news again

Marian has started chemo round 6 and her neutrophyls have gone up again, they are now 1.6 (where 2 is normal and below one and they'll cease treatment). So this is really good news. This treatment is the half way mark for her and depending on the results from her Pet scan (This friday 10am oz'y time) she may not need the full 12 rounds.

Thank you all

Dr F

Excellent news! Glad to hear it. What exactly are neutrophyls?

They are baby white blood cells, when they are low it means the white blood cells aren't being replenished. If they continue the treatment the chemo will destroy whats left of her white blood cells and if there isn't enough nuetrophyls present to grow into white cells, then she will become highly succeptible to infection.

Re: My Wifes cancer

Updates, for those who are supersticious (SP?) Friday 13th was a good news day for us.

The specialist informed us after tests that Marians cancer is in remission.
She was only half way through her treatment so they will give her another two rounds of chemo to be sure, After this they are going to look at surgery to remove the primary tumer. We are now praying that this will not result in a colostrophy bag.

So heres to Friday the 13th:

It will for be a day of prayers answered.

And for all those who have supported us from the shack:

Cheers
Dr F
