Memorial to a good friend... goodbye Walter Barno!

Walter Barno 1959-2013

Walter installed our first car audio system in 1984... and sold us our first home audio system in 1984. I can thank him for getting me into car and home audio in such a big way. It is all his fault! Walter was a true friend that we kept up with faithfully over the years as he moved from place to place. It is hard to believe Walter is no longer with us.

I originally met Walter at American Audio (Enterprise) in 1984. We had just purchased a new 1984 Chevy van, a stripped down hull. He and the guys over there took that van and completely customized it with windows, captain chairs, carpet... the works... including a Nakamichi/Zapco system that was amazing. He also sold my wife and I our first home stereo system consisting of an NAD preamp tuner and NAD amp, with a Thorens Jubilee turntable, and a pair of EPI speakers. It was no doubt all his fault... he got me hooked early on.

Over the years I financed several vehicles for him that he was always going to fix up and hardly ever did, but that didn't stop him from driving them and hauling them dogs of his everywhere he went. I remember visiting him at his home in Montgomery, and going to the store where he worked quite frequently, he always had them dogs with him. He even kept them in a pen behind the store at CKR, but sometimes they would be in that Ford Bronco he owned. He loved them dogs.

When we built our first house in 1990, he was at CKR in Montgomery. He built an 18" sub for us and then he and Andy came down to our house in Troy and we installed it under our house. I never will forget Walter being under the house and as he was crawling out, I stuck a fake rubber snake in the pathway under the house and I thought Walter was gonna lift that house off the foundation.

Walter helped me with so many of my car audio systems over the years. After he got more into management, it was always funny to see him arguing with the installers and telling them the way he wanted it done. I remember we spent countless hours in shops where he worked, working on several of the systems we installed in various vehicles we owned. We use to go to all the crank off contests around the southeast... and even won a couple of those. He would always get furious when we did not place. I remember the times where he would call us up and say he was coming through on a long road trip and would stop in and visit with us for a while. We always tried to keep up with him regardless of where he moved to. I remember calling him in Miami, Florida after he had moved down there for a while. He installed a system for us when he was in Marianna, Florida... when he was in Dothan, when he was at Jimmy's the first go around... and several systems for us when he was at CKR. Walter was my "go-to" guy for car stereo.

It wasn't all that many years ago that he and Rodny Alvarez brought a huge custom built subwoofer down to our house in Luverne and we sat and listened to music for several hours. Walter is on the right.

Yep! I can definitely thank him for getting me into car stereo and home audio. We spent a lot of fun times together over the years. We will miss you Walter!

Sorry to hear about your loss Sonnie, friends can be the toughest. Lost my best pal about 5 years ago, still miss him. Second only to dad. When we were off, we were doing something fun. Good friends are few & far between.

a little late to the game, but my condolences. It's always tough to lose a friend, especially when they're taken at such a young age
