Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

From a quick Google it would appear that Danish erratics are Cambrian and brought down from Sweden by ancient ice flows. Denmark was fully covered in thick ice by the ice ages. I read recently that some of Denmark's few high places are the result of lake bottoms being left behind by the ice melting. The highest point in Denmark is only 170 meters (only 557 feet) above sea level near Skanderborg in Jutland.

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

well we certainly haven't heard from him for a while.

Life for me is O.K, I am a bit nervous because my wife has to go in for a PET and CT scan plus blood tests soon. I am also a bit stressed/worried because work is getting difficult.

Outside that were has everybody gone? I notice a few have posted in the physics forum so they are still around. Someone should run some physics trivia games in that forum, it would provide everyone and oportunity to learn about science without have to read copious volumes of journals.

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

Fincave is alive and well! Been kind of busy at work which is really nothing new, keeps me out of mischief I suppose. Have been trying to do some research on HD-DVD players as am probably going to take the plunge soon, am getting some money back from the taxman in December and so have decided to buy myself a nice Christmas present. I have also been working on a tattoo design for myself, I know what I want it just needs minor alterations, taking up quite some time though as it has to be just right!!

JCD's box looks amazing, I however did not see any hooks in yet for him to hang up the meat, bet he could dry quite a lot at a time! Am guessing the back panel would be for setting variable drying temperatures and controlling the humidity?

Been following the physics forum, hope it does not get out of hand.

drf: I hope that all goes well with the scans and blood tests, let us know. You are both in my thoughts.

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

I keep looking in the AV chain stores in Denmark for HD DVD players.

I found one. It costs a bomb and sales must be pathetic.

I still haven't seen what my screen can do because I still have no HD sources.

We watch only satellite TV and I'd need an HD receiver to receive free to air from other countries.

The vast majority of our film watching is hired DVDs and there's no sign of those going HD.

Digital Terrestrial HD is non-starter here in Denmark. The national broadcaster is laying off hundreds as it is due to being overstretched on a major building project.
They keep advertising that people should buy their TV licenses. We haven't been able to receive broadcasts for years because of a poor signal! Now they've gone digital we need a new set top box!

HD is a very damp squib!

Heads should be bashed together over this Blueray/HDDVD idiocy!

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

Hi Fin

thanks for the thoughts. I will let everyone know when i get news.

I don't think the physics thread will get out of hand, It will be a good litmus test (pardon the pun) for this forums ability to convene a scientific discussion without coming to blows.

JCD's meat dryer seems to have a variable crossover point , I wonder if thats for different styles of meat?

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

Good morning...

Indeed, I hope all goes well with your wife Drf... and with work.

I think the evolution science thread will be fine... as long as we all stay the course of our maturity and don't get too carried away. There's nothing wrong with a controversial subject as long as we remain civil.

Actually I thought The Top 100 Rock Albums of All Time would be far more controversial for us home theater nuts.

Are HD-DVD players that hard to find outside of North America?

It is not that they are hard to come by though there are not that many sellers in Finland at the moment, the problem is more as to what model would best suit my needs at the moment and in the future (my receiver does not have HDMI but my projector does, my projector is only 720p, my receiver has 5.1 inputs but those are currently used by my dvd player which is SACD and DVD-Audio capable etc etc). Still have some research to do but will order the unit in December, probably going to cost me lots of money as I will be wanting to upgrade my receiver at some stage as well. I will probably be ordering the unit from Germany as the prices are more reasonable, I would prefer to use a local seller but when the price difference can be as high as 30% then I am willing to purchase from abroad.

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

You all got me.. I saw Fin's meat box and had to make my own!

But to answer drf's question, the box is veneered with Lacewood, stained with Sedona Red and then 3 coats of polyeurothane. In person it still looks good, but you can see that I cheated if you get up close.

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

These are only midrange enclosures. The tweeters are in a seperate box, the whole system is going to be a hi-fi version of a live audio rig. so there will be tweeter enclosures next then I start work on the subs. Each pair will be run through an active x-over, an e.q and then a delay if req. But I am not going to start work on those until the speakers are built and in the room (so they can be customised during the design process rather than after).

I think the requisition went to a commitee for evaluation and final recomendations before the next sitting of the high councel .

Ahah! Have you ever considered lying through your teeth?

Eg: "I need this or that to replace something that doesn't work any more because it is worn out".

"These things have a finite lifetime, you know".

"I should have bought better quality at the time but may have been too optimistic."

Yay... it's Friday ... all day long!

I've got to get my project started too... changing up my front equipment cabinet so that I can accommodate a floorstanding center speaker.

How does this sound:

"I thought if I could make it myself, I would save enough money so you can buy the curtains you really wanted!"

Sonnie, sounds awesome, what centre did you have in mind? remember lots ofpics are good.

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

That's not really a lie... but it is deceptive.

Right now I'm experimenting with Boston Acoustics VR2's for mains and a VRC toppled center... but a single VR2 would be just a few inches too tall and may distract viewing at the bottom of the screen since the top would be right at the bottom of the screen, so I'll probably go with a VR1 for a center.

Here's the VR2's at 38" tall...

The VR1 is 36" tall...

The difference is the midrange is missing in the VR1, so I'm not sure how that will work.

Nice, your only talking 2 inches, would raising your screen be that perceptable?

Re: The SWAMP! - Volume One

Nope... screen is permanent... it's the wall with a framed border. No room to go higher at the top either. That 2 inches is considerable when your eyes are on level with the bottom of the screen.

Certainly is a little bit of a conundrum.

Maybe you could put a brick under the wall?
