Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

I don't think Miles is going anywhere. He is a ood coach, though I am not yet convinced he is in a league with guys like Saban and UM, or Spurrier. Not sure that Michigan would want him if they get more unhappy with Carr, though that is the obvious place for him to go. I just get the feeling that he has taken a rather lazy approach to coaching the Tigers, when what they needed was a dictatorial leader like Saban to keep them on track. Mike Archer tried that but did not start with the talent that Miles has had.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

My wife says she was watching Saban's conference after the game and he was mad... really mad. Not sure what that was all about, but I'm sure I'll find out later.

We definitely took advantage of the LSU mistakes, but got sloppy ourselves there at the end.

Saban has really done about all he can do with this team and then some. He has actually surprised me these last couple of games. Maybe we can win our last two and come away with only a 3 loss season, not bad at all.

I'm looking forward to his recruiting. 17 of those starters tonight for LSU were his recruits. He did good. I think Les is a jam up coach as well and will end up doing very well overall.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

My concern about Miles is whether he is going to recruit just for talent or for talent and character. Saban is a highly focused guy who demands a lot and has to recruit people that have the character to deal with his ascerbic and intense personality. Miles needs to be really careful about who he recruits in the same way, as we have seen many times that great talent does not always lead to great teams at LSU. The character of the personnel has made the difference in recent years, compared to the decades of mediocre performances. Louisiana is a place where character of recruits can vary greatly. You have guys like Hester, then you have guys like Perrilloux. The occasional diamond in the rough, or just another thug? We'll see if LSU goes the route of USC and OSU, or Miami and FSU.

Yeah... good points.

As well... I'll also be interested in seeing what route Bama takes over the next 3-4 years. I sure hope it can be in the direction of USC and OSU... and even LSU over the last several years.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

I think Bama and UF will be the dominant teams in the SEC in the next decade. Both are desirable destinations for recruits, have the best coaches in the country, and are class operations. LSU will be there if Miles recruits the right people and coaches for character. He said they needed poise in the second half, and they showed it at times, that is when they were not playing like reckless thugs.

Saban is set financially and has learned his lesson about the difference between coaching in the pros and college and I don't think he is going anywhere. I think you can expect another couple of decades of a nationally dominant program.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

y'all think more deeply about football than I seem to do. This is getting out of my league. But for what it's worth, my loyalty to LSU exists because of the opportunities my education there provided for me, not because of school sports, which receive far more attention than they should at just about any school. It's just for fun, sometimes.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

I certainly agree. For all the jokes, and Randy Newman's commentary in song, LSU is a great school in many regards. I am a SEC fan and follow most sports, but certainly it is just for fun, mostly. Sports are also part of the culture and there is much to be learned and gained from participation and being a fan. I used to be less of a spectator and more of a participant, but have grown to be more of a fan in recent years. It does have its value, and there is much in common between sports and the rest of life. For each thing there is a season...

College football is just plain outright exciting to me... fun, fun, fun! NO doubt!

I always enjoy seeing the SEC beat up on other conferences.

I even like a little bit of pro football. HD has made it more interesting to me.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

That's absolutely right!
It quits being fun when taken TOO seriously.
BTW check the Sagarin indices for NCAA football by conference,
which conference is #1?

Was there any doubt? I didn't think so.

Nah... I don't take it that seriously. I mean, I'd never kill anyone over a game. Maybe just a light punch or two...

Good grief, can this season get any more strange. I take the kids camping for the w/e and come back and the Tigers are #1 again!

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

I honestly don't think I've ever seen such sloppy football playing. Of course I didn't see this Bama game... didn't even listen, but heard and read about it. Our QB is absolutely giving our ballgames away. Just ridiculous... pitiful... throw in the towel...

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

I have no explanation for 'Bama's playing the last two games.
I confess it would be tempting to exult in 'Bama's misery, but I'm talking of the misery of real human beings, there are human rights issue here. And, next year an extraordinarily improved 'Bama might just romp into Tiger Stadium and clean our clocks, especially since we'll have to start over with a new head coach. I expect the Tigers will struggle against Arkansas, but who can tell? I would like to see 'Bama make a spirited battle against Auburn. I wonder who will be LSU's next head football coach?

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

Those two losses were pitiful... and the sad thing is we were 2 bad offensive plays away from winning each game...

I still think we are a couple years away from being the "old" Bama that we know and love. Hopefully next year will at least be improved though.

So you think Miles is headed to Ann Arbor huh?

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

It is what my intuition is telling me. I've never understood why schools start this stuff before the bowl games are finished, leading to end-of-season problems for both schools involved.

Honesty forces me to confess... I want to see 'Bama show up to play, but I DON'T want back the old Bama you know and love.

While I was in college during the early '70s, never missing a home game, I witnessed one heartbreaking loss to 'Bama after another, a relentless parade of futility. And we were one of the better teams in the SEC! It cost Charles McClendon his job, a truly fine gentleman, starting a constant change of head coaches every 4 years or so ever since. No school should be allowed to repeat this legacy... go War Eagle!

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

lol... hey... we are going through that year after year lashing now. All these teams we use to whip on a regular basis are paying us back year after year. The little schools like Monroe, La... that we would use to beat 77-0... are beating us.

I doubt we will ever be the Bama of the 60' and 70's, but I think we be a team to contend with once in every 3-4 years on average and a really good team otherwise that will lose a few all along. IOW's, I think we can be an LSU, USC, Florida type team... if Saban can recruit after losing like we are losing.

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

You obviously understand, that's why I feel a temptation to exult in 'Bama's misery. But as explained before, I am culturally more a product of MS and AL than LA. So... I resist that temptation by perversely supporting Auburn to put this 'Bama thing out of its misery, in the interest of the least suffering for the most people. LSU's current status gives me the motivation to be so magnaminious to the Great State of Alabama in this way.

BTW, my favorite Alabama school is the University of West Alabama right here in Sumter County, my ancestral homeland. They happen to be Tigers...

Re: College Football begins... your thoughts!

It does not pay to be ranked #1 this year! Wow! I was not expecting what I witnessed tonight, although I expected it to be a good game, which I suppose it was for Razorback fans.

Think about the close games LSU has had this year... has to be a record.

Interesting top 3 teams about right now.

Welp... 6-6 for the year... miserable, but at least it is over.

Yeah... I doubt Saban is going anywhere, that's for sure. Not that we don't already have some really stupid fans that want him gone. Not surprising.

I don't follow baseball, basketball, etc... just football.
